PROCESSING TECHNICIAN II
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an entrance level technical position in which an employee, during an assigned shift, assists in the actual operation and maintenance of a Type A sewage treatment plant with facilities for the activated sludge process (including modifications) and wet-air sludge oxidation process. Since this is an entrance level position and the employee is involved in learning the routine of plant operation, direct supervision is received from operating personnel of higher rank. As the employee becomes more experienced, leeway is permitted for carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel.
A Processing Technician II also does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Learns and assists in the operation of all equipment and processing relating to the interception, pumping, treatment and disposal of sewage in a safe, efficient and economical manner;
Learns and monitors systems and equipment relating to the treatment of sewage and to the disposal of sludge generated by the treatment process;
Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of regulators and interceptors;
Learns and assists in the operation and maintenance of pumping stations;
Assists in keeping necessary records during shift;
Learns to mix and administer required chemicals and to perform laboratory tests;
Performs routine and incidental maintenance and assists maintenance personnel on major projects;
Makes inspection of all systems and machinery during an assigned shift;
Performs study and reading assignments, observes demonstrations and otherwise learns the techniques of operation and maintenance of the plant;
Performs increasingly responsible duties as assigned in the operation and maintenance of the plant;
Performs custodial duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Familiarity with elementary principles of chemistry and general science; good general intelligence; good observation; mechanical aptitude; ability to learn principles and procedures relating to operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant; ability to develop skill in the operation and maintenance of pumps, valves and related mechanical equipment; ability to get along well with others; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; industry and dependability; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(a) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma;
or
(b) Four (4) years of work experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS: Eligibility for a New York State Class 5 driver’s license at time of application; possession of license at time of appointment and must maintain the license throughout the term of employment.
