Overview
Buffalo Grove Animal Hospital is looking to expand our team! We are seeking a compassionate, motivated, and dependable Veterinary Assistant who is passionate about providing exceptional care to our patients and outstanding service to our clients.
We are a small animal, AAHA-accredited hospital that has proudly served the Buffalo Grove community for over 50 years. We believe in teamwork, compassion, and treating every patient as if they were our own.
Duties
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with examinations and treatments
- Safely restrain and handle dogs and cats using low-stress handling techniques
- Prepare exam rooms and treatment areas
- Collect laboratory samples and perform in-house diagnostic testing
- Administer medications and vaccines as directed by the veterinarian
- Obtain patient histories and record medical information accurately
- Take digital radiographs
- Prepare patients for surgery and assist during surgical procedures
- Monitor hospitalized patients and provide nursing care
- Place and maintain intravenous catheters (experience preferred)
- Monitor patient vital signs and report changes to the veterinarian
- Educate clients on medications, preventive care, nutrition, and post-operative instructions
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary hospital environment
- Assist with inventory, stocking supplies, and daily hospital maintenance
- Help care for boarding patients when needed
- Work collaboratively with all team members to provide excellent patient care
Qualifications
- Prior kennel or animal husbandry experience preferred; familiarity with companion animal medicine is a plus
- Knowledge of animal anatomy, restraint techniques, and veterinary critical care procedures
- Experience with laboratory work IDEXX, veterinary software, and Microsoft Office applications is advantageous
- Strong understanding of veterinary terminology, surgical procedures, and medical-surgical protocols
- Excellent dog handling skills along with animal husbandry expertise to ensure safe interactions with diverse species including dogs, cats, and equines
- Ability to follow aseptic techniques diligently during medical procedures and laboratory testing
- Exceptional customer service skills combined with clear client communication abilities in a busy clinical setting
