Job Status: AFSCME Bargaining Unit Position, Full-Time Permanent
Rate of Pay: Starts at $27.05 per hour.
Shift: Varies depending on season
Standard hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (September to May)
Summer hours are Monday-Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (May to September)
During snow and ice emergency events, standard hours may be moved to 12-hour shifts for 24-hour coverage. New employees should expect to work midnight to noon hours.
Overtime is expected for emergency roadside events after hours and for emergency snow and ice events.
SUMMARY
The Highway Worker II involves both equipment operation as well as light to heavy manual work of a routine nature. Employees receive daily work assignments on various crews under the direction and supervision of a Foreman. Work is checked for results and adherence to instructions and standards of operations.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE ASSIGNED
Loads and unloads tools and materials as needed for projects. May transport bulk materials.
Establishes and sets up proper work zones and traffic control for work areas in accordance with standards. May perform flagging operations. May install temporary signs and barricades.
Performs duties in connection with public works construction, repair and maintenance projects, such as bridge deck repairs and sealing; culvert/manhole/storm sewer repairs; pavement and roadway work; guardrail installations and repairs; forestry and roadside debris cleanup; etc. Work will require the use of hand tools such as shovels, picks, rakes, wrenches, etc. and operation of power hand tools such as drills, chain saws, weed trimmers, and light construction equipment such as a concrete mixer, tar kettle, cuttting saw, etc. May operate pick-ups with light equipment in tow. May operate a dump truck on a normal basis and with accessory equipment in ice and snow control situations. Other equipment which may be operated include tractors with accessory equipment, front end bucket loader, tow type brooms, rollers, brush chippers, pumps and forklifts.
Works as part of a team and/or assists co-workers.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of common work practices and skill in use of hand tools, power tools, and simple construction equipment related to public works construction and maintenance.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written work instruction.
Good physical condition with no serious defects in vision, hearing or members.
Ability to perform light to heavy manual labor and outside work under varying weather conditions
Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for the State of Ohio in regard to the flagging of traffic, to be provided upon employment.
Knowledge of proper barricading and warning signs for work areas, to be provided upon employment.
QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Ability to interact positively with and communicate clearly within a team
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
1 year prior maintenance, construction or public works experience and demonstrated ability upon hire to perform required tasks under general supervision including the safe use of hand and power tools and equipment required in this classification.
Valid Class A CDL license of resident state preferred; or Valid Driver’s License and ability to meet resident state requirements to obtain a Class A or B CDL license within the probationary period to hold and maintain this position.
Must have an acceptable driving record.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is typically performed in the field. Field work will include work under adverse conditions such as inclement weather or in environments containing dust, heat, vibrations, steam and/or wind; environments subject to extreme or sudden changes in air temperature, pressure or humidity; work outdoors on uneven or wet ground surfaces; and work in confined spaces or extremely small work spaces. Work will require contact with products with MSDS sheets. Work environments may also be extremely noisy, and will expose workers to moving vehicles and heavy equipment.
Work shall require physical effort including standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
Must be willing to have an adjustable work schedule as shift varies by season and assigned work, which may include overtime on nights and weekends and up to 12-hour shifts.
Must consent to and successfully pass pre-employment screening including criminal background check, physical and drug screen.
Must be willing to consent to pre-employment and annual FMCSA Clearinghouse queries.
Must be willing to submit to random drug and alcohol screening for duration of employment.
