Job Description:
Continuing Education and Customized Training (CECT) division at Lake Superior College is seeking CDL instructors to provide classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel training for students enrolled in Class A and Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) programs. Ready to come off the road without leaving the industry? This position offers the opportunity to share your experience, train future drivers, and help meet workforce needs across the region.
CDL instructors are responsible for delivering training that meets Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements and preparing students for their CDL skills test. Training may take place in the classroom, online, on the driving range, and on public roads. The instructor evaluates student performance, maintains required records, and supports student success through coaching and mentoring.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid, unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
- Current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate or ability to obtain.
- Minimum three (3) years of recent commercial driving experience with manual transmission.
- Knowledge of Class A and Class B vehicle operation, vehicle inspections, inspection documentation, backing, shifting, coupling and uncoupling, and safe driving practices.
- Ability to operate and train students using various types of commercial vehicles.
- Strong communication and instructional skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain a positive learning environment by treating all students with respect, encouraging participation, adapting instruction to individual learning needs, and promoting a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement to support student success and achievement of CDL training objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Self-directed with the ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing program needs.
- Basic computer skills, or willingness to learn, for communication, recordkeeping, instructional activities, and department software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate of a truck driving program.
- Previous experience as a CDL trainer, driver trainer, or instructor.
- Experience delivering FMCSA ELDT-compliant training.
- Experience training drivers in Class A and/or Class B vehicle operation.
- Experience in post-secondary education, workforce development, military training, apprenticeship training, or adult education.
- Experience teaching, coaching, mentoring, onboarding, or training adult learners.
- Experience using technology is preferred. Training will be provided for applicants who are willing to learn.
- Ability to complete, interpret, and teach driving logs.
- Safe, accident-free driving record for the most recent 200,000 miles or two (2) years.
- Familiarity with advanced safety technologies used in commercial vehicles.
- Knowledge of federal and state CDL regulations and guidelines.
- Experience with vehicle maintenance reporting and inspection documentation.
- HazMat, Doubles/Triples, Tanker, and Passenger endorsements preferred.
Other Requirements
- Must meet college driving requirements.
- Ability to work in classroom, training range, and roadway settings.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and entering/exiting commercial vehicles.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions and transportation-related hazards.
- Occasional evening instruction may be required.
