Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC)Position Summary
The Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) is responsible for the professional, operational, and regulatory oversight of the pharmacy. This leadership position ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and accreditation standards while promoting excellence in patient care, medication safety, and pharmacy operations. The PIC provides strategic direction, supervises pharmacy personnel, oversees quality assurance initiatives, and serves as the designated representative to regulatory agencies and healthcare partners. The PIC is accountable for maintaining a culture of compliance, clinical excellence, and operational efficiency.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesRegulatory and Compliance Oversight
- Maintain full compliance with all federal, state, and local pharmacy laws, regulations, and professional standards.
- Ensure pharmacy licenses, permits, registrations, and certifications remain current and in good standing.
- Serve as the primary liaison during inspections, audits, and inquiries conducted by regulatory agencies and accrediting organizations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain pharmacy policies, procedures, and compliance programs.
- Oversee controlled substance management, including procurement, storage, inventory reconciliation, documentation, and diversion prevention measures.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, DEA, Board of Pharmacy regulations, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
Clinical and Patient Care Leadership
- Provide clinical oversight to ensure the safe, accurate, and effective dispensing of medications.
- Review and verify prescriptions for appropriateness, accuracy, drug interactions, contraindications, and therapeutic outcomes.
- Deliver comprehensive medication counseling and patient education.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care and medication management.
- Promote evidence-based pharmacy practices and clinical service development.
- Support patient safety initiatives and quality improvement activities.
Operational Management
- Direct and oversee daily pharmacy operations to ensure efficiency, productivity, and exceptional service delivery.
- Establish workflow processes that support operational excellence and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor prescription volume, turnaround times, and service quality metrics.
- Ensure proper maintenance, security, and functionality of pharmacy systems, equipment, and technology.
- Lead operational planning and implement process improvements to enhance patient care and business performance.
Leadership and Personnel Management
- Provide leadership, supervision, and professional development to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, interns, and support staff.
- Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate pharmacy personnel in accordance with organizational standards.
- Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and continuous learning.
- Conduct performance evaluations and implement corrective action plans when necessary.
- Ensure staffing levels adequately support patient care needs and operational demands.
Quality Assurance and Risk Management
- Lead the pharmacy’s Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program.
- Monitor, investigate, and document medication errors, adverse drug events, and quality concerns.
- Implement corrective and preventive action plans to improve patient safety and operational performance.
- Conduct regular audits to assess compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation to support quality initiatives and regulatory readiness.
Financial and Inventory Stewardship
- Oversee medication procurement, inventory management, and supply chain operations.
- Ensure inventory levels are maintained to support patient needs while minimizing waste and financial loss.
- Monitor pharmacy financial performance, including budget adherence, purchasing activities, and cost-control initiatives.
- Analyze operational and financial reports to identify opportunities for improvement and growth.
- Ensure proper management of expired, recalled, and unusable medications.
QualificationsEducation
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited school or college of pharmacy.
Licensure
- Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in the state of practice.
- Eligibility to serve as Pharmacist-in-Charge in accordance with state regulatory requirements.
- Immunization certification and other applicable clinical certifications preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of three to five years of progressive pharmacy practice experience.
- Prior supervisory, management, or leadership experience preferred.
- Experience in regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and pharmacy operations management strongly preferred.

The PIC must consistently uphold the highest standards of professional ethics, clinical integrity, and accountability while serving as a leader and advocate for both patients and pharmacy staff.
Pay: From $80,000.00 per year
