JOB SUMMARY
The Paraprofessional (Special Education)- Self-Contained helps students navigate everyday challenges by developing and aiding students’ daily living, motor and behavioral skills, including but not limited to feeding and toileting, provides one-on-one support to students who may be medically fragile and have severe disabilities. Under the direction of a Special Education teacher, assists in the supervision and instruction of special education students in specific classes such as Diagnostic Kindergarten/1st Grade, Academic Support, Behavior Support, and Essential Elements, data collection and Medicaid documentation. To be successful in this role, the incumbent must demonstrate a high level of patience and the ability to maintain a calm and nurturing demeanor in high-stress situations.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or a recognized equivalent

Per Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), interested applicants must be Highly Qualified to be considered for the position and have completed one of the following:

completed at least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours), or
-
obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution, or
-
satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment/PRAXIS ETS) with a score of 460 or higher
The higher education institution official transcripts, or college diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment must be provided with your application or upon a contingent offer of employment.Unofficial transcripts can be a placeholder until official transcripts are provided

Effective communication skills with both children and adults, including speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English; proficiency in grammar and punctuation

Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios

Experience using standard office equipment (e.g., phone, copy, fax machines etc.) and Microsoft Office

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist and supervise students as they attend general education classes and provide support according to their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs; under the direction of the teacher, utilize knowledge of student’s IEP and concepts for Special Education learning to implement learning and behavior plans that meet students' social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and ensure compliance with IEPs

Work with students who may have significant behavior, academic, or personal health care needs, which include feeding, toileting, moving, rolling, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting up to 30 pounds. Training will be provided

Under the guidance of the teacher, provide instruction to students 1:1 or in small groups to work on IEP goals or other materials as directed. Use knowledge of age-appropriate activities and stages of child development to implement classroom management techniques, provide classroom interventions and a variety of activities (e.g., constructive play, learning in small groups, behavior modification activities, etc.), while managing time effectively

Collect data pertaining to student behaviors, academics, and self-care. Under the supervision of the teacher, document your duties with students to support Medicaid funding. Perform record-keeping and clerical functions using basic job-related equipment (e.g., copying, grading, etc.) to assist teacher and administrator

Provide support in helping students get safely on and off the bus in the AM/PM

Administer assessment instruments under the direction of teacher; confer with teacher to assist in evaluating student progress and implement student objectives

Operate physical education equipment and supervise playground activities using standardized methods. Support classroom teacher in monitoring students out in the community during school-sanctioned events

Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students and adhere to district policies, procedures, and state law

Administer first aid/CPR to students when necessary and adhere to safety practices
-
Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios, read a variety of manuals, and write documents following prescribed formats

Participate in various meetings and workshops as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions; present information to others; attend additional training opportunities as needed

Independently interpret guidelines, maintain confidentiality, be attentive to detail, and adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required

Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform duties

Work under limited supervision; utilize time-management and prioritization strategies; accurately process detailed information; meet deadlines

Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively

Communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
