Summary:
The Multimedia Journalist is a key member of the team who will be working with a team in a busy newsroom. This individual will be responsible for creating imaginative, accurate and engaging news content for TV, on-line and social media output.
The Multimedia Journalist will be required to perform tasks from beginning to end regarding producing and airing new bulletins and shows.
Responsibilities:
- Will be responsible for originating, researching, writing, producing, and presenting material using text, stills, audio and video as required.
- Will also be required to accurately and impartially cover stories and events and put them into an appropriate context to meet the needs of the audience.
- Produce content for TV that may include news stories, live coverage, sequences, interviews, packages, discussions, background pieces, analysis, and features.
- For on-line and social media, the individual will be required to write and use video, audio, stills and graphics to produce news articles, features, engaging posts and interactive material.
- Responsible for moving a story forward, by amending and updating material as required. Research, report, write, translate, and adapt existing stories or programmed material from English into Farsi.
- From time to time, the MMJ will be required to report in text, stills, audio or video from the field in a range of formats for all Afghanistan International Television platforms.
- Act as an Outputter under the direct supervision of an Editor as required.
- Operate the Autocue as required.
- Will be required to anchor or present TV content.
- Foreign travel may be necessary.
- Carry out any other tasks as required.
Requirements:
- Well-networked within the television production and news operations world
- Recent and relevant broadcast news or multimedia experience.
- A wide and up-to-date knowledge of Afghanistan and international affairs.
- In-depth understanding of Afghanistan’s history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience.
- Farsi as your first (or equivalent) language, fluency in English, and the ability to write, translate and adapt material accurately and to tight deadlines.
- The ability to produce original material and, preferably, the ability to adapt stories for multimedia output.
- Must have sufficiently strong story development skills to submit original story ideas daily.
- The ability to report from the field as required.
- Suitable voice and presentation skills (training can be provided, but some experience is essential).
- The ability to exercise editorial judgement and display an understanding of the law as it relates to journalism.
- Excellent contacts within Afghanistan and its diaspora across politics, culture, social issues, business, and sports.
- Must be able to develop sources, work a beat, and break stories
- Must have strong on-camera skills
- Must have the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and work under a time pressure deadline
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- This position is expected to work on a Rota basis (no fixed hours) and working patterns should be flexible, and will change based on operational requirements.
- Required to work from the Washington, DC office.
- Required to anchor or present News content
Education & Experience
- 3 + years’ experience in television news reporting
- Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, Communications or related field or comparable television work experience preferred.
- Experience working internationally, preferred bilingual in Farsi/English
Schedule: Full-time, rotating shift (day, evening, night, holiday, weekends)

Pay: $75,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
