Job Summary
Four ten-hour shifts
Rotating weekends * one weekend a month*
Primarily second shift with option of day shift weekends
Responsibilities:
Assist physicians
Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and determine appropriate nursing interventions
Review nursing observations, documentation, and clinical information completed by LPNs for changes in condition, completeness, and required follow-up
Complete additional RN assessments when indicated and determine whether provider notification, treatment, monitoring, or outside medical evaluation is necessary
Provide clinical direction and consultation to LPNs regarding inmate care
Develop, update, and evaluate nursing care plans for inmates with acute, chronic, or complex healthcare needs
Identify and evaluate changes in an inmate's condition and initiate appropriate interventions, provider notifications, or emergency transfer
Evaluate inmate responses to medications, treatments, and nursing interventions
Assist the physician and other healthcare providers during examinations and treatment
Administer medications and complete scheduled medication passes
Review medication and treatment orders for accuracy and appropriate implementation
Order medications and maintain appropriate medication inventory
Stock and maintain the medication cart
Providie ordered treatments and other nursing care to inmates
Coordinate medical transfers and communicate relevant clinical information to receiving facilities
Review hospital discharge instructions, laboratory results, specialist recommendations, and other clinical documentation requiring nursing follow-up
Demonstrate proficiency with the electronic health record and computer-based documentation
Accurately document assessments, nursing intervention, provider notifications, medication administration, and inmate responses to treatment
Demonstrate initiative, independent clinical judgment, and appropriate prioritization of inmate healthcare needs
Communicate with the Captain, Sergeants, and other correctional staff regarding medically necessary precautions or interventions while maintaining inmate confidentiality
Notifies Ashland County-City Health Department of reportable communicable diseases in accordance with facility policy and applicable requirements
Communicate with the Ashland County Center for Alcohol and Drug Abuse and other treatment providers.
Communicates with Appleseed Crisis Emergency Services for suicidal, homicidal or acutely psychotic, or experiencing another behavioral health emergency
Prepare and review charts for psychiatric appointments
Participate in clinical chart audits, quality improvment activities, infection-control practices, and review of significant medical incidents
Perform other RN-level duties consistent with education, demonstrated competency, facility policy, and Ohio law
Maintains adequate typing skills to complete nursing assessments, notes, and medication documentation
Experience
Candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- Valid RN license in the state of practice.
- Previous experience in corrections, a hospital or medical-surgical setting is preferred.
- Familiarity with patient care protocols and medical documentation practices
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team-oriented environment.
- A commitment to providing compassionate care and maintaining patient dignity at all times.
