Title: EL Teacher
Department: English Learners
Reports to (Title): Director of EL/Building Principal
An English Learner (EL) teacher is a certified educator who specializes in supporting students whose
primary language is not English. EL teachers provide targeted instruction to help students develop
proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English while also supporting their academic
success across all subject areas. They use research-based strategies, culturally responsive practices,
and differentiated instruction to meet students’ individual language needs.
Major Functions:
- Provide direct English language development (ELD) instruction to English Learners aligned to
state English language proficiency standards.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, families, and school staff to ensure English Learners have
access to grade-level content and opportunities to succeed academically and socially.
- Maintain accurate and compliant documentation related to English Learner identification,
services, progress monitoring, and reclassification.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide instructional strategies, resources, and guidance to classroom teachers to support
effective instruction for English Learners.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that address students’ individual language proficiency
levels in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, program services, and ways to
support language development at home.
- Monitor student progress using formal and informal assessments and adjust instruction based
on data.
- Participate in professional development and remain current on best practices, state
requirements, and federal guidelines related to English Learner education.
- Collaborate with school teams, administrators, and district staff to ensure compliance with Title
III and state English Learner program requirements.
- Adhere to guidelines outlined in the DeSoto County EL teacher handbook
- Perform tasks and assume responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of
EL Services or superintendent
- Adhere to the Mississippi Code of Ethics
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all DeSoto County Schools’ records
Minimum Requirements:
- Valid MS teaching license
- Requirements as set forth by the DeSoto County School board
