POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned water treatment, pumping, storage, and distribution facilities. Monitors treatment processes, equipment, and water quality to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and company standards. Works independently within an assigned territory and cross-trains to support other Southern Delaware facilities as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate water treatment plants, deep well pumps, centrifugal pumps, booster stations, water storage tanks, pressure regulating valves, and related water supply and distribution equipment.
- Operate and monitor chemical feed systems, including caustic, chlorine, phosphate, polymer, sodium permanganate, fluoride, and other treatment chemicals.
- Start, stop, and adjust pumps, motors, valves, and other equipment to control and maintain proper water treatment processes and potable water flows.
- Monitor gauges, meters, instrumentation, control panels, and other equipment to identify variations in operating conditions and determine appropriate adjustments.
- Monitor and control water treatment and distribution equipment remotely using the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
- Perform daily rounds and inspections of assigned water treatment facilities and distribution system equipment.
- Inspect pumps, motors, bearings, valves, seals, filters, analyzers, and other mechanical and electrical equipment for proper operation and signs of wear or malfunction.
- Identify equipment deficiencies and initiate requests for repair, maintenance, or replacement as appropriate.
- Collect water samples at designated locations and stages of the treatment process and perform routine water quality tests in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
- Read and accurately record charts, gauges, meters, instrumentation, and other operating data in shift logs and required reports.
- Identify and correct operational malfunctions within the scope of assigned responsibilities and promptly report significant issues to the Supervisor or Manager.
- Clean and maintain tanks, filters, screens, pumps, treatment equipment, and other related facilities and equipment.
- Maintain buildings, grounds, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Duties may include routine custodial activities.
- Maintain accurate records and complete required reports and computer data entry.
- Respond to customer complaints or concerns related to water quality, pressure, service, or other water system issues and communicate findings to appropriate personnel.
- Operate company vehicles and travel between assigned facilities and service locations as required.
- Follow all applicable State and Federal regulations, company policies, operating procedures, and safety requirements.
- Participate in cross-training and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to operate facilities within other designated territories.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- A valid driver's license with clean driving record in accordance with company and insurance standards
- Ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate State of Delaware water operator certification/license required for the position.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to enter, retrieve, and maintain operational data.
- Basic mathematical skills and the ability to perform calculations necessary for water treatment and operational duties.
- Ability to read and accurately interpret gauges, meters, charts, instrumentation, and operating data.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, operating procedures, safety requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment in responding to operational conditions.
- Ability to effectively communicate and work cooperatively with coworkers, supervisors, customers, contractors, and other individuals.
- Ability to safely operate basic hand tools and equipment.
- Ability to wear required respiratory protection, including a negative-pressure respirator and/or Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), when required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in water treatment, water distribution, pumping systems, or a closely related field.
- Water treatment or water distribution operator certification beyond the minimum required level.
- Experience operating water treatment plants, wells, booster stations, water storage facilities, or distribution systems.
- Experience with SCADA systems and remote monitoring and control systems.
- Experience with chemical feed systems and water quality testing.
- Experience performing routine inspection and troubleshooting of pumps, motors, valves, filters, analyzers, and related mechanical or electrical equipment.
- Experience working with State or Federal drinking water regulations and regulatory reporting requirements.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Heavy- Exerting 50 to 100lbs of force occasionally and/or more than 50lbs. of force frequently and/or more than 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are more than those for Heavy work.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, reach, and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment, tools, supplies, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and other access structures associated with water treatment facilities, tanks, and pumping facilities.
- Ability to perform work requiring visual acuity to read gauges, meters, instrumentation, charts, computer screens, and equipment conditions.
- Ability to hear and communicate effectively in operational environments.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection.
- Ability to work in environments involving odors, dust, noise, chemical exposure, and other potentially hazardous conditions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at water treatment plants, wells, booster stations, water storage facilities, and throughout the water distribution system.
- Exposure to varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, humidity, and other outdoor conditions.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical equipment, water treatment chemicals, chlorine gas, dust, odors, and elevated noise levels.
- May work in confined or restricted areas and other potentially hazardous environments.
- Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- As conditions require, ability to wear respiratory protective equipment includes a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for extended periods
- May be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, emergency assignments, or outside normal business hours.
- Participates in a rotating on-call schedule and may be required to respond to operational emergencies.
