VMI is seeking an Equipment Technician to join our manufacturing team. We are looking for individuals with strong mechanical aptitude, good problem-solving skills, and an interest in working with mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
We are open to a range of experience levels—from mechanically inclined individuals looking to develop their skills to experienced technicians capable of independently troubleshooting and completing complex equipment work. Position level and responsibilities will be based on demonstrated experience and technical competency.
Responsibilities
- Assemble, install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on dredges and related equipment.
- Perform mechanical assembly and installation of equipment and components.
- Install and wire electrical components, controls, sensors, motors, and related equipment.
- Assemble and service hydraulic components including hoses, valves, cylinders, pumps, and motors.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, hydraulic schematics, and technical documentation appropriate to skill level.
- Test equipment and completed assemblies for proper operation, quality, and adherence to specifications.
- Diagnose equipment problems and perform troubleshooting appropriate to experience and competency level.
- Perform equipment maintenance and repairs as assigned.
- Assist engineers and senior technicians with equipment modifications, prototype builds, testing, and new product development.
- Document work performed and communicate equipment issues, findings, and recommended solutions.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow established safety procedures and company standards.
- Occasional travel to equipment locations required for commissioning and maintenance.
- Perform additional tasks as required.

Experience with heavy equipment, industrial machinery, agricultural or construction equipment, automotive or diesel repair, industrial maintenance, marine equipment, or similar technical work is beneficial but not required for all levels.
Technician Levels
Apprentice Technician — Demonstrates mechanical aptitude and strong work habits while developing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic skills through hands-on training and supervised work.
Technician I — Possesses fundamental equipment skills and can complete routine assembly, service, and troubleshooting tasks with moderate supervision.
Technician II — Demonstrates superior mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic competency and can independently troubleshoot problems, interpret technical documentation, and complete assignments with limited supervision.
