Position Summary
The EMT provides prehospital emergency medical care and transportation in accordance with established protocols and standards. This role responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, supports patient assessment and treatment, and works collaboratively with paramedics and healthcare partners to deliver safe, high-quality patient care.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls in a safe and efficient manner
- Assess, treat, and monitor patients in accordance with established protocols and scope of practice
- Assist paramedics with advanced life support (ALS) interventions
- Provide patient packaging, transport, and ongoing care during transport
- Accurately document patient care and maintain required reports
- Ensure ambulance and equipment are clean, stocked, and response-ready at all times
- Perform routine checks of equipment and report deficiencies promptly
- Maintain familiarity with all equipment and its proper use
- Adhere to all company SOPs, local REMSA guidelines, and regulatory requirements
- Maintain current certifications and licensure
- Follow all infection control, PPE, and safety protocols
- Maintain a professional appearance and conduct at all times
- Communicate effectively with partners, dispatch, hospitals, and other responders
- Foster positive working relationships within the EMS system and community
- Participate in required Continuing Medical Education (CME)
- Obtain and maintain required certifications (e.g., PHTLS within one year)
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Position Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet driving requirements per company policy
- Ability to pass background check and drug screening
- Current South Dakota EMT Certification
- Current BLS of Healthcare Providers Certification
- National Registry EMT (NREMT) Required
- Must be 18 years old
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull patients and equipment (140–200 lbs with assistance)
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting
- Ability to work in confined spaces and unpredictable environments
- Hearing/listening, including the ability to communicate effectively in person and via radio and to detect auditory alarms and signals.
Working Environment
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and hazards. This role includes exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and infectious materials, requiring strict adherence to PPE and safety protocols. Work is performed in dynamic, high-stress, and physically demanding environments, including confined spaces and moving vehicles.
