First Class Pre-K Lead Teacher
Position Summary
The First Class Pre-K Teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining a high-quality learning environment that promotes the social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language development of four-year-old children. As part of Alabama's nationally recognized First Class Pre-K program, the teacher implements developmentally appropriate practices aligned with Alabama First Class Pre-K standards, utilizes Teaching Strategies GOLD to assess and document children's growth, and fosters high-quality teacher-child interactions as measured by the CLASS framework.
The First Class Pre-K Teacher works collaboratively with teaching partners, families, administrators, and support staff to provide an engaging, inclusive, and nurturing classroom environment. The teacher supports the mission of the Center by helping children develop curiosity, confidence, kindness, and a lifelong love of learning.
Essential ResponsibilitiesClassroom Instruction and Environment
- Plan and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with Alabama First Class Pre-K standards and curriculum requirements.
- Create a classroom environment that encourages exploration, creativity, problem-solving, and independence.
- Establish consistent routines and positive behavior guidance practices that support children's social-emotional development.
- Maintain a safe, healthy, organized, and welcoming classroom environment.
Assessment and Child Development
- Utilize Teaching Strategies GOLD to observe, assess, and document children's growth and development.
- Maintain accurate assessment records and portfolios in accordance with Alabama First Class Pre-K requirements.
- Use assessment data to individualize instruction and support each child's developmental progress.
- Participate in screening, assessment, and school readiness initiatives as required.
High-Quality Interactions and Program Excellence
- Demonstrate effective teacher-child interactions that support strong outcomes in the CLASS domains of Emotional Support, Classroom Organization, and Instructional Support.
- Participate in classroom observations, coaching, and continuous quality improvement efforts.
- Implement instructional strategies that promote language development, critical thinking, and positive social relationships.
- Maintain compliance with Alabama First Class Pre-K standards, DHR licensing regulations, accreditation requirements, and school policies.
Family Engagement
- Build strong partnerships with families through regular communication and collaboration.
- Conduct parent conferences and provide information regarding children's growth, development, and learning goals.
- Encourage family involvement in classroom and school activities.
- Respond to family questions and concerns in a professional, timely, and respectful manner.
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with classroom assistants, specialists, administrators, and support staff.
- Participate in required staff meetings, professional development, training, and coaching opportunities.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education
- Lead teachers must be 21 years of age or older
- Lead teachers must possess one of the following degrees:
- Human Environmental Science degree with a concentration in Early Childhood or Child Development
- Elementary Education Degree with a minimum of 18 hours in early childhood/child development coursework
- Experience using Teaching Strategies GOLD for assessment, documentation, and lesson planning.
- Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices for preschool-aged children.
- Ability to meet all Alabama First Class Pre-K employment requirements.
- Strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching in an Alabama First Class Pre-K or other high-quality early childhood program.
- CLASS Observation Training or related CLASS professional development.
- Experience working with diverse learners and families.
- Experience participating in quality improvement, accreditation, or state-funded early childhood programs.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move classroom materials and equipment up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to sit on the floor, bend, kneel, and participate in activities with young children.
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time position that follows the operating schedule of Alabama First Class Pre-K requirements.
Pay: $47,600.00 per year
