JUNIOR HIGH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for coaching and guiding student-athletes to develop a high level of skill while fostering discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect. The selected candidate will follow the direction of the Athletic Director and/or Principal, assist in establishing performance and eligibility standards for interscholastic competition, and encourage all participants to maintain high standards as students, citizens, and athletes. The junior high football season generally begins in late August and concludes in October.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Must successfully complete a criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance.

Curently hold or obtain all required certifications and training prior to the start of the season, including First Aid and CPR, NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching, and concussion and steroid-awareness training.

Complete required concussion and steroid-awareness training.

Possess the knowledge necessary to teach the appropriate skills and techniques for the assigned sport.

Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with student-athletes, District employees, parents, and the general public.

Demonstrate the ability to help student-athletes develop a high level of athletic skill, an appreciation for discipline, and increased self-esteem.

Meet any equivalent qualifications the Board determines to be appropriate and acceptable.

Follow and maintain knowledge of all District policies and procedures relevant to the position.

Maintain all required certifications and complete required training.

Work with the Athletic Director to establish and implement a program philosophy and system.

Serve as a positive role model and consistently demonstrate appropriate behavior and sportsmanship.

Ensure the proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of athletic equipment and uniforms.

Maintain responsibility for equipment assigned to the team or program, ensure athletes return all issued items, and complete an equipment inventory at the end of the season.

Notify the Athletic Director of needed repairs to equipment, grounds, buildings, or facilities.

Assist the Athletic Director as needed with weekly student-athlete eligibility requirements, including grades, discipline, and required paperwork.

Assist the Athletic Director, as needed, with preparing for activities, practices, games, and meets.

Follow all District financial policies concerning fundraising, collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.

Supervise student-athletes in locker rooms during home and away events and enforce appropriate standards of behavior.

Travel with and supervise student-athletes on team transportation to and from games, meets, and other activities.

Care for and supervise all facilities while the team is present, ensuring that all areas are clean and secure before departure.

Ensure compliance with all medical and safety requirements.

Complete a District accident report within 24 hours for any student injury, regardless of whether the student-athlete seeks medical attention.

Represent the school and District professionally in all interactions with students, parents, staff, community members, and the media.

When fines result from coach's actions, accept personal responsibility for fines assessed against Gaston School District.

Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.

Demonstrate commitment to the District and perform additional duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee may occasionally climb stairs, ropes or ladders. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision. The employee must have the ability to demonstrate proper techniques and skills needed for athletic participation.

The work environment includes outdoor football fields, stadiums, locker rooms, weight rooms, athletic training areas, school facilities, buses, and other practice or competition settings. The employee regularly works outdoors and may be exposed to rain, wind, heat, cold, humidity, uneven or slippery surfaces, mud, dust, and varying field conditions. Noise levels are frequently moderate to high due to athletes, spectators, whistles, public-address systems, and other game or practice activities. The employee may also be exposed to athletic equipment, physical contact associated with the sport, bodily fluids, blood, and bloodborne pathogens.
