Position: Operations Assistant
Schedule: Full-Time, 12-Month Position
Compensation: $40,000 per year
Location: Canarsie Children’s First Academy, Brooklyn, New York.
Position Overview:
Canarsie Children’s First Academy is seeking a dependable, organized, energetic, and child-centered Operations Assistant to support the daily operations of our early childhood school. This position is vital to ensuring the school runs efficiently while maintaining a safe, welcoming, clean, and nurturing environment for children, families, staff, and visitors.
The Operations Assistant serves as the first point of contact for families and visitors and provides operational, administrative, classroom, and facilities support throughout the school day.
Schedule
- Monday–Friday
- Open the building daily at 7:45 a.m.
- Close the building daily at 3:30 p.m.
- 12-month position
- Follows the New York City Department of Education NYCDOE holiday calendar
- 5 additional paid vacation days with prior administrative approval
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
School Operations
- Open and prepare the school for students and staff each morning.
- Secure and close the building each afternoon.
- Conduct daily walkthroughs to ensure the building is clean, safe, and ready for instruction.
- Report maintenance, safety, or building concerns promptly.
- Assist with emergency preparedness procedures and drills.
Safety; Front Desk Responsibilities
- Monitor the front entrance throughout the school day.
- Welcome families, visitors, vendors, and community partners with professionalism.
- Verify identification before admitting visitors.
- Ensure all visitors sign in and receive visitor badges.
- Ensure parents sign children in and out using Brightwheel.
- Maintain school security procedures at all times.
Attendance; Administrative Support
- Take and accurately enter daily student attendance.
- Answer phones and direct calls appropriately.
- Receive, sort, and distribute mail and deliveries.
- Assist with copying, filing, data entry, and preparing classroom materials.
- Place supply orders and maintain inventory.
- Support school events, family engagement activities, and meetings.
Kitchen & Food Service
- Prep and organize breakfast, and lunch service.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen.
- Wash dishes and sanitize kitchen equipment.
- Stock food and kitchen supplies.
- Monitor food inventory and notify administration when supplies are low.
- Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines.
Custodial & Facilities Support
- Collect garbage from classrooms, offices, bathrooms, and common areas.
- Replace trash liners and maintain cleanliness throughout the building.
- Sweep, mop, and perform light custodial duties as needed.
- Move classroom furniture and equipment.
- Lift, transport, and organize supplies.
- Set up and break down rooms for meetings, workshops, and special events.
Classroom Support
- Provide classroom coverage during teacher breaks.
- Assist classrooms when staff members are absent.
- Supervise children under the direction of certified staff.
- Support transitions, arrival, dismissal, meal times, and outdoor play.
- Assist with classroom organization and preparation of instructional materials.
General Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and staff.
- Demonstrate professionalism and teamwork.
- Follow all licensing regulations and school policies.
- Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Director to support the successful operation of the school.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate’s degree preferred.
- Experience working in an early childhood or school setting preferred.
- Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities.
- Basic computer skills, including email, Google Workspace, and Brightwheel or willingness to learn.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform light physical work.
- Must successfully pass all required background clearances.
