Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. The Life Safety Services section is a specialized unit within the Building Services Division of Facilities Services. This section is comprised of the Life Safety/Electronic-Specialty Shop, the Access Control/Key Shop, and the Emergency Generator Shop. This organizational unit delivers a high level of maintenance and support to safeguard human life, property, research, and other critical areas of significant financial and time investments for the entire University campus community including: all residence halls, classrooms facilities, research lab facilities, athletics facilities, medical school facilities, and offices facilities. These areas include but are not limited to: the Central Alarm Receiving System (CARS), all fire alarm detection and suppression systems, security and CCTV systems, key control, accessibility controllers, Biometric and Card Access, equipment alarm systems, and backup power emergency generators. Additionally, this unit supports all facets of Facilities Services, Energy Services, Environment Health & Safety, Public Safety, Facilities Planning & Construction, and Residential Student Housing in their efforts to support the campus community, all of which contribute to the University’s mission of teaching, research and public service.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $6,283 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$3,141.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $3,141.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
The Security Surveillance Systems Technician is primarily responsible for the installation and maintenance of campus electronic security systems, including surveillance, alarm, card access, remote key access controls, electric and traditional access hardware, and security-related software or hardware. Duties include designing and coordinating system installations, managing surveillance-related work requests, assisting and mentoring other technicians, assigning and prioritizing work requests, and collaborating with other lead technicians and the shop supervisor in support of the Life Safety shop’s mission.
Other responsibilities include the design of card access systems, security alarms and hardware installations customized to the customers’ needs and requirements. This position anticipates and proactively identifies maintenance issues before they occur by analyzing system performance, past trends, and applying technical notes provided by equipment and system manufacturers.
Must possess a valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Requires an NC Locksmith License or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Management Preferences
Demonstrated experience with managing IP camera systems and video monitoring equipment, including installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic security devices and hardware.
Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and correct electronic hardware, software, and network issues for non-standard devices in which documentation is incomplete or not available.
Experience supporting Video Management Systems (VMS), including camera configuration, firmware upgrades, user access management, and system integration.
Demonstrated technical knowledge and ability to proactively identify and address maintenance issues by examining system performance, reviewing performance trends, and applying manufacturer-issued technical instructions and guidance.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Must possess a valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Requires an NC Locksmith License or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to work with hands and arms above head for extended periods of time, work on hands and knees and potentially crawl under floors and buildings, move objects weighing up to 50 lbs., climb and work from ladders and scaffolding, work in confined spaces, stand for extended periods of time, and walk significant distances daily including climbing stairs.
Provides focused support for Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 2+ and 3 labs, which requires baseline blood draw, a physical and inoculations, and entry into hot labs with an Environment, Health & Safety escort, including wearing respiratory protection, medical certification, fit testing, and specialized training. Performs emergency callback duty on a rotating basis is support of BSL 2+ and 3 labs. Provides oversight to other trades supporting these labs.
Serves as a mandatory employee and reports to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close.
