Assistant Editor / Reporter

Gold Mountain California News Media is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Assistant Editor to join our award-winning editorial team. This is an excellent opportunity for a journalist who enjoys both editing and reporting while playing an integral role in producing high-quality community newspapers, magazines and digital content.
The ideal candidate is passionate about local journalism, possesses exceptional editing and writing skills, thrives in a fast-paced newsroom, and has a strong commitment to accuracy and deadlines.
Responsibilities
- Copy edit reporter stories to ensure clarity, accuracy, grammar, style and AP standards.
- Proofread newspaper pages prior to publication to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Plan, coordinate and produce content for monthly magazines and special publications.
- Proofread magazine layouts and drafts before production.
- Collaborate with the Editor and newsroom staff on story planning and editorial direction.
- Pitch, research, report and write original news and feature stories.
- Write engaging headlines, captions and cutlines.
- Verify facts, names, dates and other editorial details prior to publication.
- Assist in planning editorial calendars and coverage priorities.
- Help maintain consistency across print, digital and social media platforms.
- Support the Editor with daily newsroom operations and other editorial duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English or a related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of newsroom or editorial experience preferred.
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Working knowledge of AP Style.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interviewing, research and fact-checking abilities.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Experience with Adobe InDesign and newsroom content management systems is a plus.
- Photography and social media experience are beneficial but not required.
