JOB DESCRIPTION
The paraeducator will support and assist the occupational/physical therapist in the delivery of therapy services in the district’s elementary, middle and high schools, as well as other designated community placement sites, and will perform other job-related duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree OR 72 quarter college credits OR 48 semester college credits OR a passing score on the ETS test.
- Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to application. Official transcripts of all levels of education, including high school, required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
- Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.
Must hold a valid Washington State driver’s license with a clean driving record as evidenced by a driver’s abstract. Must be able to drive own car from site to site and maintain valid vehicle insurance.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Must attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
- Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
- Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.
- Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement.
- Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.
- Must be able to use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read and respond to email.
Must be first-aid certified or willing to obtain certification in a timely manner.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
- Evidence of ability to carry out prescribed occupational and physical therapy programs.
- Evidence of ability to model appropriate behaviors and provide consistent intervention procedures with students.
- Experience working with students in individual and group settings.
- Experience facilitating programs for communication disordered students.
- Experience keeping data for IEP goals/objectives.
- Experience working with IEP teams.
- Experience carrying out prescribed instructional and behavioral management program.
- Understanding of Federal and state laws pertaining to disabled students.
- Positive evaluations and recommendations that support character and work ethic.
- Excellent attendance, punctuality, dependability, self-disciplined, and a self-starter.
- Value and maintain the confidential nature of sensitive student information.
- Understand and utilize proper channels of communication.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with parents and staff.
- Ability to work successfully in team situations.
- Ability to demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to use good organization skills and maintain documentation that is timely and accurate.
- The candidate must possess the strength and stamina to carry out therapy programs with young active students.
- Willingness to feed / toilet / diaper students as needed.
- Possess a working knowledge of all special education paperwork and the ability to maintain and organize occupational and physical therapy files, including Medicaid billing. Evidence of patience and warmth when working with disabled students and the ability to remain calm in crisis.
- Evidence of ability to be flexible and to take direction.
- Ability to lift students.
- Demonstrated proficiency and accuracy in word processing skills, Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to transport/carry/move therapy equipment between and within schools.
- The candidate must provide evidence of the ability to:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish and maintain an appropriate environment for therapy (i.e. behavioral management, safety and cleanliness).
- Assist in setting up and clearing work area before and after each therapy session.
- Work with students in individual and group therapy sessions following objectives established in the individualized education plans (IEP’s) and therapy plans written by the occupational and physical therapist.
- Observe, monitor, and record student performance daily.
- Communicate concerns, progress, and program needs to supervising therapist; job requires effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Maintain equipment and supplies (i.e. wash mats, prepare therapy materials, update inventory, etc.)
- Assist in constructing or adapting equipment as needed.
- Maintain and update departmental records as assigned (i.e. computer caseload reports, student address and phone list, inventory, etc.).
- Maintain confidentiality concerning students within and outside job setting as appropriate.
- Work as an effective team member with staff, parents, administration and students.
- Work independently with minimal supervision and with commitment to excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Perform all duties of the position within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or occupational and physical therapist.

- Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. The employee is required to taste and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs. and up to 100 lbs. with help; must also be able to lift overhead.
