Job Overview
We own and operate a portfolio of historic apartment buildings in Detroit, and we're looking for a smart, curious person who wants to learn how buildings work.
You'll learn to diagnose problems, make repairs, work with contractors and skilled trades, and understand the systems that keep an apartment building running. One day you might be troubleshooting a plumbing problem, the next repairing a door, figuring out why a boiler isn't heating properly, or walking a building with an electrician.
If you like figuring things out, enjoy working with your hands, and would rather spend part of your day moving around interesting buildings than sitting behind a desk, you may really like this job.
Responsibilities
- Diagnosing and repairing everyday building problems
- Learning basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and other building systems
- Completing repairs in apartments and common areas
- Preparing apartments for new residents
- Inspecting buildings and identifying problems before they become bigger ones
- Working alongside experienced contractors and skilled tradespeople
- Helping oversee outside vendors when specialized work is required
- Keeping track of projects and making sure things actually get finished
- Talking with residents professionally and respectfully
- Learning the quirks—and the craftsmanship—of Detroit buildings that have been standing for 80, 100, or sometimes more than 100 years
We don't expect you to know how to do all of this on your first day. We expect you to want to learn.
Requirements
This could be a great fit for someone early in their career who is smart, capable, and hasn't necessarily found the kind of work they want to build a career around yet.
You might have studied business, engineering, architecture, history—or something completely unrelated. You might have grown up fixing things with a parent or grandparent. Maybe you've renovated a house, worked construction during the summers, built things as a hobby, or are simply the person your friends call when something doesn't work.
The common denominator is that you're curious and capable.

A college degree is preferred, but it isn't required. Aptitude, attitude, and work ethic matter much more to us than your résumé.
A driver's license and reliable transportation are required.

Pay: $45,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
