Job Summary
The Optometrist (OD) provides comprehensive primary eye care services to patients of Tzu Chi Medical Foundation (TCMF) in accordance with the highest standards of clinical practice. This position delivers patient-centered, evidence-based optometric care in both clinic and community settings while demonstrating accountability, professionalism, and compassion consistent with the Foundation's mission and values.
The Optometrist works collaboratively with physicians, clinical leadership, and interdisciplinary care teams to support quality patient outcomes, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and organizational performance goals. This role includes providing services at TCMF clinics, participating in community outreach programs, health fairs, and delivering eye care through TCMF's Mobile Vision Units at contracted facilities, schools, shelters, senior and adult care facilities, and other community partner locations.
Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Perform comprehensive eye examinations for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Obtain and document complete medical, ocular, family, medication, and social histories.
- Evaluate visual acuity, binocular vision, ocular motility, refraction, accommodation, visual fields, intraocular pressure, color vision, and other diagnostic testing as clinically indicated.
- Utilize appropriate diagnostic equipment including slit lamp biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, lensometry, retinal imaging, and other instruments necessary for comprehensive eye care.
- Diagnose and manage refractive errors and ocular diseases including, but not limited to:
- Myopia
- Hyperopia
- Astigmatism
- Presbyopia
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Macular degeneration
- Retinal disorders
- Dry eye disease
- Ocular infections and inflammatory conditions
- Detect systemic diseases with ocular manifestations and coordinate referrals to primary care physicians, ophthalmologists, or other specialists when appropriate.
- Develop and document comprehensive treatment plans, including therapeutic prescriptions, follow-up care, referrals, and patient education.
- Prescribe and fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision correction devices.
- Provide low vision evaluations, vision rehabilitation, and vision therapy as appropriate.
- Perform removal of superficial ocular foreign bodies within the scope of optometric practice.
- Counsel patients regarding eye health, disease prevention, nutrition, diabetes, hypertension, and healthy vision practices.
Community Outreach & Mobile Vision Services
- Provide comprehensive eye care services aboard TCMF Mobile Vision Units.
- Travel to assigned TCMF clinics and contracted community service locations.
- Participate in community health fairs, vision screening events, and outreach programs.
- Deliver services at contracted facilities including:
- Schools
- Shelters
- Adult day health centers
- Senior living communities
- Skilled nursing facilities
- Community centers
- Other partner organizations
- Support TCMF's mission to improve access to quality eye care for underserved and vulnerable populations.
- Collaborate with outreach coordinators and community partners to ensure efficient and compassionate service delivery.
Requirements
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited School or College of Optometry.
- Current and unrestricted California Optometrist license.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and one of the following preferred: Mandarin, Cantonese, or Spanish.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and patient education skills.
- Ability to travel to multiple clinic and community locations as needed.
- Experience working with underserved or diverse populations is preferred.
