Hampton County is seeking a Building Inspector / Code Enforcement Officer to perform field inspections, code-enforcement inspections, property maintenance review, permit-related site inspections, and related customer-service duties. The position supports safe construction, consistent ordinance enforcement, and efficient development review. ICC certification and South Carolina Building Codes Council registration or eligibility are preferred.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Performs building, residential, commercial, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire, property maintenance, and related inspections within certification authority.
- Reviews assigned permit applications and plans for completeness and routes specialized reviews to the Building Official, plan reviewer, fire, floodplain, zoning, or engineering support as needed.
- Conducts field inspections and re-inspections for permitted work.
- Documents inspection results, corrections, violations, photographs, notices, and case status.
- Responds to code-enforcement complaints involving unsafe structures, property maintenance, zoning, nuisance, junk/debris, unfit dwellings, and similar issues.
- Issues or recommends notices of violation, correction letters, stop-work orders, and enforcement referrals.
- Coordinates with the County Attorney, Sheriff’s Office, Magistrate Court, Fire, Emergency Management, Public Works, and other departments as needed.
- Assists with mobile home inspections, sign permits, accessory structures, floodplain site checks, and zoning compliance.
- Supports Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals cases by conducting site visits and collecting field information.
- Provides professional customer service to applicants, contractors, residents, and property owners.
- Maintains accurate case, permit, inspection, and enforcement records.
- Assists in preparing monthly reports on inspections, code cases, permits, and service levels.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
