Dental Assistant Duties and Responsibilities
- assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures
- taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays)
- asking about the patient's medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse
- serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol and preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment
- helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment
- providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling)
- teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health;
(e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling)
- taking impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth)
- performing office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer
- communicating with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing and ordering supplies)
- helping to provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and oral surgery
Dental Assistant Requirements and Qualifications
- Accurate and precise attention to detail
- Excellent understanding of dental hygiene procedures
- Compassionate and caring of patients
- Knowledge of aseptic and sterilization techniques
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work in an intense, concentrated environment
- Calm and cool-headed with a positive attitude
- Complies with all regulations, protocols, and procedures
- Dental Assisting certification: Licensed, registered, or certified by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)
- Current certification in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
- X-Ray Certification: Meet all local and state requirements to operate radiography equipment
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
- Licensed as a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) or a Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF)
- Current CPR certification preferred
- Radiology certification preferred
- 1-2 years of experience as an RDA
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to follow outlined policies and guidelines
- Possess a professional and positive attitude
- Knowledge about dental software- Dentrix, Eaglesoft , open dental
- Dental Charting and Treatment Planning.
