The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.
Job Summary:
This position is part of the athletic facilities crew that maintains 40+ fields, over 94 acres and two synthetic turf stadiums.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Must have the ability to operate a variety of automotive, athletic facility, park and lawn equipment, including equipment used in snow removal/snow plowing operations.
- Must possess experience in turf and athletic facility maintenance.
- Must have experience with small motor equipment repair/maintenance.
- Must have working knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods, materials and skills used in a variety of athletic facility maintenance responsibilities.
- Requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the general public.
- Excellent communication skills, the ability to work in a diverse environment that includes language diversity.
Required Skills & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess physical strength and agility necessary to perform the essential functions of the job duties.
- Must be able to work weekends, nights, and different shifts required by field rental and event commitment and winter operations.
Necessary requirements
- Candidate must have a valid Class B Maine Driver’s License in good standing or have the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of appointment date.
- Candidates must pass a federally mandated drug test at time of obtaining a Class B License.
- Must have and maintain a good driving record.
- Must undergo a pre-employment physical assessment.
Expected Hours/Schedule:
Full-Time, 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., occasional weekend shifts based on events

Salary & Benefits:
This is a union position, Labor and Trades Grade 18, with a starting pay range of $24.29-$27.24 per hour, based on relevant years of experience.
