Provides direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations. Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the perioperative environment. Communicates with surgeons and anesthesiologists continuously and as needed about patient condition. Assists with the maintenance of Operating Room (OR) equipment and inventory. Actively participates in continuous quality improvement activities. Supervises OR staff, assisting with staff scheduling.
- Directs actions toward supervision of nursing care given to pediatric (e.g., thermoregulation, keeps parents with child as long as possible), adolescent, adult and geriatric (e.g., keeps noise level to a minimum, padding of all pressure points and bony prominences) patients within the OR and PACU, according to nursing principles and standards.
- Assists Director in completing payroll on time.
- Supervises clinical aspects of the Sterile Processing Department.
- Supervises care of OR Suite and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility and operational ability of all items.
- Directs all safety measures to prevent accidents, harm or injury to patients, staff or equipment.
- Controls traffic to avoid infection.
- Verifies that proper temperature, humidity and ventilation and lighting are maintained to provide a work environment that supports infection prevention and comfort. Documents daily temperature and humidity findings in appropriate record. Reports any discrepancies to engineering as soon as possible.
- Assists surgeons in operations through provision of qualified staff. Formulates and facilitates the 6 week staffing schedule in a timely manner.
- Assures presence of a registered nurse as circulator for all cases.
- Assigns personnel; delegates specific duties and tasks.
- Provides and controls supplies and equipment needed for successful operation of the Operating Room and SPD. Directs and delegates control of inventories to ensure proper amounts are available.
- Supervises care and cleanliness of equipment and supplies to ensure good working condition.
- Evaluates need for new or different items in regard to present and new trends or needs of the OR and SPD.
- Continuously supervises staff to ensure quality of nursing care.
- Assigns staff to perform QI. Reviews continuous quality improvement monitoring; analyzes and evaluates data; develops plans for correction.
- Assists OR Director in developing, revising and implementing OR, and SPD policies and procedures.
- Assists the OR Director in planning budgets for the OR and SPD.
- Assists the OR Director with education and staff development activities, maintaining personnel files to include attendance, license maintenance and discipline.
- Provides for the clinical orientation of new staff members.
- Plans, controls, directs and coordinates administrative duties to ensure the functioning of the OR, and SPD staff.
- Completes probationary and annual staff performance reviews in a timely manner.
- Reports changes of any type to OR, PACU and SPD staff and to departments affected by the changes (e.g. Pathology, Radiology, and Outpatient Surgery).
- Demonstrates knowledge of nursing theory and management; demonstrates knowledge of disaster and emergency policies and procedures. Keeps informed on new developments in perioperative nursing and surgery. Demonstrates knowledge of good interpersonal relationships.
- Assists with conducting monthly staff meetings encouraging staff to participate in problem solving.
- Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain a steady level of productivity; self-motivated. Completes projects by due date.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Surgical Services Director and / Asst. Director.
- Adheres to SRRMC behavior standards
- Complies with SRRMC policies / Procedures protecting patient information and the confidentiality of the information in accordance with the federal and state regulations.
- Completes .edu's and other required hospital education by the due date.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
Minimum of two (2) years perioperative nursing experience Management experience preferred
Current Registered Nurse licensure
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) card
Certification in specialty preferred
