JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Teacher: Drama / Theatre
SUPERVISES: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.
JOB GOAL: To develop in each pupil an appreciation of theatre arts as part of general culture; to teach techniques of dramatic expression and performance; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of theatre; and to develop knowledge and skills in acting, stage production, technical theatre, and dramatic interpretation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Possess a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in Theatre Arts, Drama, English Language Arts, or a closely related teaching field with appropriate endorsement.
Demonstrate knowledge of theatre arts instruction, stage performance, directing, and technical theatre production.
Ability to plan and deliver engaging, student-centered instruction that promotes creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, administrators, and community partners.
Knowledge of stagecraft, lighting, sound, costumes, set design, and theatre safety procedures preferred.
Demonstrated professionalism, dependability, flexibility, and commitment to student achievement and fine arts education.
REPORTS TO: School Principal, Designee and/or Superintendent of Schools.
SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plan a balanced theatre arts program and organize daily class time so that rehearsal, instruction, performance preparation, and production activities can be accomplished within the allotted time.
Instruct pupils in the use, care, and safe operation of theatre equipment, props, costumes, sound equipment, lighting systems, and stage materials.
Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom, rehearsal, and performance settings.
Evaluate, select, and requisition scripts, instructional aids, equipment, costumes, props, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records.
Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilize appropriate state standards, guides, task lists, etc.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Assist administration in maintaining and supervising the use of theatre equipment, costumes, props, and stage facilities. Maintain and implement written control policies regarding such materials.
After consultation with and approval by the school principal, schedule all drama performances, rehearsals, productions, and related events.
Represent his/her school at appropriate local, state, and regional theatre events, competitions, festivals, and performances.
Lead in writing, publishing, and disseminating an annual theatre handbook consisting of rules, regulations, and operating procedures of the theatre program.
In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and student outcomes.
Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, scripts, equipment, and other instructional materials which provide students with the best learning opportunities.
Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods, and curriculum.
Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, clean, safe, and conducive to learning.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment related to theatre arts instruction.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community members; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read music or handwritten or typed material, and the ability to focus. The employee hears conversations in a quiet and noisy environment and has the ability to tell where a sound is coming from.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Length of contract and salary will be established by the Board.
