Overview
The BayNet is seeking a passionate and dedicated Evening Breaking News Reporter to join our newsroom. This position plays a critical role in covering breaking news and developing stories during one of our busiest news periods. The ideal candidate will have strong journalism skills, excellent news judgment, and the ability to quickly produce accurate, engaging, and timely content.
Both part-time and full-time positions are available. The standard shift is Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Additional hours may occasionally be available as major news develops.
Responsibilities
- Monitor breaking news, text alerts, email tips, scanner traffic, and newsroom updates throughout the shift.
- Write and publish breaking news within one hour of assignment, ensuring accuracy and adherence to AP style.
- Monitor local law enforcement, fire and EMS activity, weather alerts, and other developing situations.
- Gather verified information from law enforcement, public information officers, and official sources as needed.
- Update developing stories as new information becomes available.
- Prepare stories with accurate details, photos/graphics, and appropriate categories and tags.
- Post breaking news to The BayNet website and schedule or publish social media updates through Hootsuite.
- Approve or deny pending website comments.
- Use newsroom resources, including archives, traffic cameras, and public records, to provide timely updates.
- Collaborate with the Breaking News Coordinator and editorial team to ensure stories are accurate and ready for publication.
- Assist with coverage of significant breaking news outside the normal workflow when necessary.
Qualifications
- Previous journalism, reporting, or newsroom experience preferred.
- Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to work quickly under tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with AP style.
- Experience with WordPress or other content management systems is a plus.
- Experience with social media management tools such as Hootsuite.
- Excellent communication, fact-checking, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently while remaining responsive to editors and the newsroom team.
- Strong news judgment and the ability to prioritize multiple developing stories simultaneously.

Pay: $400.00 - $1,000.00 per month
