Fleet Manager – Telecommunications & Directional Drilling
Location: Fort Myers, FL 33966
Salary: $105,000–$135,000 per year

Position Summary
Southern Tier Telecommunications is seeking an experienced Fleet Manager to oversee a fleet of 100+ vehicles, heavy equipment, trailers, directional drilling (HDD) equipment, and specialized field assets supporting telecommunications construction operations.
This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for keeping our fleet and drilling equipment safe, DOT compliant, properly maintained, and available to support field production. The ideal candidate must understand both fleet management and directional drilling operations and be comfortable working in a fast-paced construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage daily fleet operations, including vehicle/equipment scheduling, dispatching, assignments, transfers, utilization, and availability.
- Oversee 100+ vehicles and associated trucks, trailers, construction equipment, and specialized field assets.
- Respond quickly to vehicle and equipment downtime to minimize disruption to field operations.
- Maintain accurate fleet, maintenance, inspection, assignment, and compliance records.
- Work closely with Operations, field leadership, mechanics, drivers, and the Safety Department to maintain safe and compliant operations.
Directional Drilling Operations
- Support telecommunications directional drilling/HDD crews and understand the operational demands of active drilling projects.
- Maintain working knowledge of HDD drill rigs, mud systems, locating equipment, vacuum excavation equipment, trailers, support trucks, and related assets.
- Coordinate transportation and deployment of drilling equipment between project sites.
- Ensure crews have the vehicles, trailers, tools, and support equipment needed to maintain production.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs for HDD equipment and support assets.
Maintenance & Preventive Maintenance
- Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs for vehicles and specialized equipment.
- Schedule maintenance based on mileage, engine hours, manufacturer recommendations, operating conditions, and equipment usage.
- Review repairs, maintenance requests, inspections, tires, brakes, hydraulics, engines, electrical systems, and emergency repairs.
- Track downtime and recurring mechanical issues and make repair-versus-replacement recommendations.
DOT Compliance, Samsara & Safety
- Ensure vehicles and drivers comply with DOT, FMCSA, state, and local requirements.
- Monitor DVIRs, inspections, registrations, driver qualifications, maintenance documentation, accidents, and safety records.
- Experience with Samsara is required, including GPS/telematics, vehicle tracking, driver behavior, alerts, utilization, and integrated camera footage.
- Establish and enforce safe-driving expectations and provide driver coaching or corrective action when necessary.
- Review driving and camera data to identify speeding, unsafe driving, excessive idling, unauthorized use, and other safety concerns.
- Work closely with the Safety Department to investigate incidents, address compliance deficiencies, implement corrective actions, and help protect employees, the public, equipment, and company assets.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of progressive fleet management experience.
- Direct experience supporting directional drilling/HDD operations.
- Telecommunications, utility, underground, or field-construction experience.
- Strong knowledge of HDD drills and support equipment, construction vehicles, trucks, and trailers.
- Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and fleet safety requirements.
- Hands-on experience with Samsara or comparable fleet GPS/telematics and camera systems; Samsara experience strongly preferred.
- Experience managing preventive maintenance and repair programs.
- Strong understanding of fleet utilization, maintenance scheduling, equipment downtime, and asset lifecycle management.
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work closely with Operations and Safety while holding drivers and field personnel accountable to company safety standards.
- Ability to travel up to 50% as operational needs require.
