Job Summary: A Doula is a trained, certified birth assistant who provides prenatal, labor, birth, and postnatal support to birthing families. Doulas also facilitate prenatal education groups and help equip parents to comfortably nurture, support, and advocate for themselves and their new babies. All required training is provided, no need to be a doula already to apply. Doulas are responsible for promoting healthy pregnancies, breast-feeding initiation, and healthy parent-child bonding and attachment. They also assist and support the families on their caseload weekly in the home and they make necessary community referrals.
Work Site: Main office (420 23rd Street, Rock Island, IL) with travel necessary to various community partner service locations (such as participant homes, local medical centers, local medical clinics and provider offices, health departments, etc.) within Rock Island and Scott Counties, with some out-of-town travel required.
Supervisor: Doula Program Coordinator
Essential Duties:
- Meet with assigned families weekly to provide pre and postnatal support.
- Provide evidence-based prenatal and parenting information, education and support to assigned families
- Develop and facilitate prenatal education and family support groups
- Maintain professional boundaries while meeting weekly with families to develop a foundation of trust
- Attend the birth and support the birthing person and their family and/or support person(s)
- Assist families in initiating and strengthening the parent-child relationship
- Encourage, support, and assist with ensuring for active medical provider engagement
- Encourage, support, and assist with breastfeeding initiation
- Actively participate within the Doula labor & delivery weekend and holiday on-call rotation
- Support growth in parenting skills and overall familial health and well-being
- Make referrals for community resources as applicable
- Develop and maintain good working relationship with health care providers
- Maintain participant case records and databases in accordance with program standards
- Meet with assigned supervisor as scheduled weekly
- Participate in agency and staff development activities
- Complete EveryChild and DONA training as directed and maintain all associated best practice guidance, scope of work, professional and performance expectations.
General Duties:
- Maintain personnel records (i.e. timesheet, mileage, and expense vouchers).
- Attend all EveryChild staff meetings and HFI team meetings
- Assist in general EveryChild planning, public activities, and fundraising as needed
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; or minimum high school diploma/GED and 3 years demonstrated experience working with adolescents, pregnant teens, infants and/or families.
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences in the workplace and in the community
- Bilingual is a plus, but not required
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality standards and professional boundaries
- Must be able to support a birthing person for up to 12 hours at a time.
- Support of a birthing person requires long periods of standing or bending, as well as extended use of arms and hands.
- Provide physical support for a birthing person that may require applying pressure, massaging, or helping place and maintain position.
- Must be able to work flexible hours and be on-call
- Must be able to attend out of town, overnight trainings
- Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and provide own transportation
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary: $45,000, depending on experience
