JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for providing professional nursing care to the patient who has undergone a procedure with either general, MAC or local anesthesia. Utilizes the nursing process, performing assessments, providing direct care based upon the assessment, evaluating the patient’s response to care, educating, and assisting with discharge.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General
1) Demonstrates knowledge of policy and procedures
2) Ensures a safe and aesthetic environment in accordance with established policies and procedures for the facility.
3) Presents in a friendly, courteous, and helpful manner in all interactions with patients and family.
4) Displays complete knowledge and understanding of peri-operative nursing care in the freestanding ambulatory surgery setting
5) Demonstrates knowledge and utilization of Universal Precautions in the care of the patient during all stages of patient’s care, i.e., proper hand washing technique, wearing of gloves and proper disposal of needles and infectious waste.
6) Accepts full responsibility for all nursing care needed by patients, including treatments, IV starts, monitoring vital signs and patient teaching.
7) Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights. Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and/or employees. Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.
8) Maintains optimal nursing practice through planned continuous professional growth.
9) Improves and/or supports others in improving the health and well-being of all patients through excellence in patient care.
10) Utilizes safety measures at all times.
11) Knows emergency protocol.
12) Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly; reports any equipment problems to the Nurse Manager and/or Administrator.
13) Maintains stock (including medication) and notifies the Nurse Manager of needed supplies or equipment.
14) May assist in ordering and inventorying medication.
15) Prepares reports as required or requested in a timely fashion and is an active participant in QA Studies.
16) Assist in emergency cart maintenance.
17) Oversees all assigned staff.
18) Attends annual facility and departmental fire/safety and infection control training and maintains current knowledge of safety procedures within the facility.
19) Completes orientation, in-service training and continuing education as required by the organization.
20) Communicates and collaborates effectively with the patient and family, peers and all members of the health care team.
21) Assists with the orientation of new Nursing personnel
22) Performs other duties as assigned /necessary
23) Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within daily work shift.
□ Pre-op
24) Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific care needs of patients, i.e., adult and geriatric.
25) Admits patients to pre-procedure area, assesses patient and prepares patient for procedure.
26) Utilizes the nursing process in patient assessment including the physical, psychosocial, neurological and educational needs of the patients.
27) Communicates with patient and documents patient’s history.
28) Documentation is complete and accurate following established policies and procedures of the facility.
29) Checks patient vital signs.
30) Chooses appropriate site for IV insertion.
31) Capable of starting IV with maximum of two attempts if needed.
32) Demonstrates adequate understanding of procedures and expected post procedure course.
□ Intra-op
33) Assists anesthesia provider with induction if needed.
34) Clearly documents positioning, medications, safety measures, etc. Accurately documents specimens. Performs adequate counts with the technician.
35) Supervises and assists in maintaining sterile field. Supervises the scrub technician.
36) Knowledge should be up-to-date on the actions of all pharmaceuticals and anesthetic agents.
□ Recovery
37) Receives patient from procedure and evaluates needs of patient, administers care accordingly.
38) Compares stability of vital signs with pre-op to establish parameters.
39) Demonstrates awareness of symptoms and possible complications of procedure, anesthesia and initial treatment.
40) Administers nursing care following established policies for the technical aspects of care, i.e., oxygen administration, care of IV site, medication administration, etc.
41) Takes appropriate actions in emergency situations such as cardiac/respiratory crises or arrests, drug reactions, fire or disaster occurrences.
42) Implements physician’s orders accurately with the knowledge and understanding of each order.
43) Assesses and documents patient status and progress in the recovery room; gives post procedure instructions; and makes post procedure telephone calls.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1) Current NY State RN license.
2) Minimum of two years of previous nursing experience in admitting, procedure or operating room role, or recovery room in an ambulatory setting or hospital. (new grad also ok)
3) At minimum BLS certified (pre op and circulating nurses) and ACLS certified (recovery room).
4) Analytical ability necessary to make sure that procedures are completed ensuring maximum care/support is rendered to the patient.
5) The interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients/families and peers (nurses, doctors and office staff) in the delivery of patient care.
6) Emotional/mental ability to perform effectively and efficiently under daily pressure of stressful or emergency situations.
7) Physical ability necessary for almost constant standing, walking and lifting. A high level of stamina also necessary for the frequent transportation of patients and the carrying of supplies and equipment.

Pay: $40.00 - $60.00 per hour
