SALARY: $17.00 hourly, including full medical and OPERS benefits
FSLA STATUS: Non-exempt (Full-time, hourly)
LOCATION: Village of Geneva-on-the-Lake
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under the direct supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, the Public Works Maintenance Worker performs semi-skilled manual labor, heavy equipment operation, and physical maintenance tasks required to preserve Village roadways, rights-of-way, stormwater infrastructure, parks, public facilities, and vehicle fleets. This position also provides secondary operational support to the Wastewater Department during emergency repairs, major collection system maintenance, or severe weather conditions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in the installation and maintenance of village streets, sidewalks and right of ways; Performs asphalt maintenance including cold patch applications, hot-mix asphalt filling, crack sealing, and pothole patching
- Operates construction equipment and power tools including dump trucks, front-end loader, scat truck, backhoe, arrow hammer, compressors, jack hammers, concrete saws
- Installs, repairs, and replaces municipal traffic control signs and street name signs; performs pavement marking and curb painting.
- Performs right-of-way groundskeeping, including tractor/zero-turn mowing, brush cutting, tree trimming, leaf collection, and roadside trash removal along public rights-of-way.
- Prepares, installs, and maintains public park grounds, village greenspace, public restrooms, and seasonal municipal recreational facilities.
- Cleans, unblocks, and repairs storm sewer catch basins, manholes, and roadside drainage ditches to mitigate localized flooding; Clears debris, brush, and fallen trees from streams, headwalls, and stormwater discharge points.
- Installs and replaces driveway culverts, storm sewer piping, and erosion control structures.
- Operates snowplow trucks, salt spreaders, and loader equipment along designated municipal plow routes during winter storm events.
- Hand-shovels, salts, and clears snow from public building walkways, municipal parking lots, and high-density pedestrian zones.
- Participates in mandatory winter standby coverage and night/weekend emergency call-outs.
- Conducts routine pre-trip and post-trip inspections on assigned vehicles, trucks, tractors, and machinery; checks oil, fluids, tire pressure, and lights.
- Performs routine cleaning, washing, greasing, and minor preventive maintenance on public works equipment and tools.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of the village garage, tool storage areas, public works yards, and municipal facilities.
- Acts as secondary ground crew support during emergency water or sewer line repairs, including trench shoring, pipe handling, backfilling, and site restoration.
- Assists with high-pressure sewer jetting operations or utility excavation work under the direction of licensed utility personnel
- Performs related work as assigned and/or required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in construction, land maintenance, road repair, heavy equipment operation, or general manual labor.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Skill in the safe operation of hand tools, power tools, lawn maintenance machinery, asphalt equipment, chainsaws, and light/medium utility trucks.
- Ability to learn and operate dump trucks, snowplows, backhoes, skid steers, and roadside mowing tractors.
- Read and understand basic maps and blueprints
- Knowledge of basic workplace safety procedures, traffic control/flagging rules, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements, and PERRP rules.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work productively in a small team environment, and perform heavy physical labor continuously under adverse weather conditions.
LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.

- Requires constant physical exertion, including heavy lifting (up to 75lbs), digging, climbing, stooping, bending, carrying, and standing for prolonged periods.
- Work is performed outdoors in extreme weather conditions, including hot summer temperatures, freezing winter snow/ice, rain, and mud.
- Exposure to moving mechanical equipment, live traffic, extreme noise, dust, vibration, and outdoor allergens.
- Must be available for mandatory overtime and emergency call-outs for winter snowplowing, downed trees, storm damage, and emergency roadway hazards.
