NEWTON COUNTY GOVERNMENT
CLASS SPECIFICATION

CLASS TITLE: CDL TRUCK DRIVER\EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I JOB CODE: 4223
REPORTS TO: LANDFILL DIRECTOR

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs work involving operating heavy duty tandem dump truck, garbage truck, tar distributor, or low-
boy tractor-trailer truck. Repairs and maintains roads, fields and rights-of-way. Drives truck delivering
materials and equipment to job site. Empties garbage compactor and transfers garbage and trash to
landfill.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

Operates heavy duty tandem dump truck to deliver gravel and rock or dirt as needed to maintain roads or
recreational facilities; spreads gravel, observes distribution of rock or gravel and assures even
distribution; hauls trash or debris as needed in preparation of roadbeds.

Operates low-boy tractor trailer truck to transport a variety of construction equipment to job sites as
required.

Operates tar distributor; observes distribution of tar, moderating speed as necessary to assure even
distribution; heats tar to proper temperature and maintains temperature.

Operates service truck that carries roller equipment for road repairs.

Operates tandem garbage truck to empty garbage compactor and transfer garbage and trash to landfill;
assures that garbage and trash are properly compacted and that the area is kept clean.

Performs routine maintenance on equipment such as fueling, checking oil and fluid levels, checking tire
pressure, and checking belts; keeps equipment clean; keeps vehicles stocked with appropriate materials
and supplies.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

All candidates to fill a vacant position in this classification must submit to and pass a drug screening test
after meeting the following minimum requirements:

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED; and,

Six months to one year of progressively responsible related experience; or,

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and
abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

CDL Truck Driver/Equipment Operator I

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A or B.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

Operation and maintenance of various types of road maintenance and construction equipment.

Operation and maintenance of various types of landfill equipment.

Rules and precautions related to roadway and equipment safety.

Traffic laws, ordinances and rules related to the operation of equipment on roadways.

Techniques and practices used in road repair and maintenance activities.

Construction and maintenance practices.

Skill in:

Operating various light road construction and maintenance equipment.

Performing routine maintenance on equipment.

Performing repair and maintenance on roads and right-of-way.

Mental and Physical Abilities to:

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Operate and maintain all assigned equipment.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to lift and/or move
20 to 50 pounds of force; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; reach with hands and arms;
and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.

Working Conditions: (depending upon area of assignment)

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed to outdoor
weather conditions; shaking objects or surfaces; conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists,
and gases, and moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery.

The incumbent's working conditions are typically loud.
