Candidate will be reliable, detail oriented, and have the ability to accurately handle a high volume of work in a fast paced environment with compassion, patience, and a positive attitude.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
1. Initiate and coordinate the surgery scheduling process.
2. Supervise and facilitate the daily operating room activities.
3. Prepare nursing work schedule and daily assignments and distribute these to staff assure anesthesia coverage.
4. Confirm office hour coverage.
5. Coordinate operating room staff meetings as needed.
6. Assist in recruiting, selecting and hiring of nursing personnel.
7. Develop educational training policies and procedures
8. Identify and assess education training needs and requirements.
9. Evaluate performance of operating room personnel and recommend raises, promotions and disciplinary actions.
10. Oversee the maintenance and repair of all operating room equipment.
11. Know the name, use and location of medications, supplies and equipment used in the operating room, recovery room, the instrument processing areas and storage.
12. Familiar with the use of sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaner, operating room table, lifts and lights, cautery unit, laser, suction, crash cart, EKG monitor, defibrillator, washer/dryer etc.
13. Familiar with organizational policies and procedures.
14. Understand the duties of the surgeon, the anesthesia provider and the support staff, within the organization.
15. Understand all duties and functions of the pre/post-operative nurse, recovery room nurse, circulating nurse, and scrub nurse technician.
16. Know the facility layout and the purpose of the various departments: reception and administration area, dressing rooms, clean and dirty utility room, operating room, recovery room, patient waiting room and consultation areas.
17. Assist and coordinate the surgery scheduling process.
18. Ensure compliance with regulations and the facility's standards of quality patient care.
19. Assist in the operating room set-up with the necessary supplies and equipment for each surgical procedure.
20. Assist in the operating room clean-up and decontamination after each surgery.
21. Handle and dispose of Biomedical Waste according to policies and procedures
22. Assist physician with all examinations.
23. Familiar with all forms and documents used in the operating room, the recovery room and patient's chart.
24. Complete and maintain the medical records and verify information and orders, pre and post-operatively.
25. Process and send specimens to the lab.
26. Educate patients and family about diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, pre-operative and post-operative instructions, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.
27. Communicate physician's instructions to health care agencies.
28. Communicate and interpret physician's instructions to patients.
29. Suggest solution to patient crisis, problems and complaints.
30. Assist physician during surgery. Ensure a smooth flow in the operating room.
31. Coordinate patient care activities for the operating room and recovery room.
32. Follow strict traffic control and maintain sterile environment in the operating room and recovery room.
33. Circulate between the operating room theaters and act as a liaison between the operating room staff and the rest of the suite, as designated.
34. Maintain strict aseptic technique at all times.
35. Adhere to operating room/office dress code policy.
36. Prepare and administer injections and medications as ordered by the physician.
37. Perform accurate instrument sponge counts.
38. Transport process and sterilize instruments and surgical trays according to established policies and procedures.
39. Maintain sterilization records and sterilization quality control records.
40. Monitor patients and deliver nursing care during recovery.
41. Assume "in-charge" duty when directed.
42. Inventory stock and order supplies.
43. Identify and resolve operational problems.
44. Inventory stock medications and perform correct controlled drug counts.
45. Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested.
46. Participate in professional development activities and maintain professional affiliation.
47. Maintain patient confidentiality.
48. Perform related work as required.
49. Have an accurate understanding of sedation medications, their use and dosage, and the means to reverse the overly sedated patient.
50. Perform an accurate pre-operative assessment of a patient from the nursing perspective including assessing allergies/ sensitivities and past medical/ surgical history.
Requirements:
1. Graduate from an accredited nursing program
2. Current R.N. license
3. Current CPR certification
4. ACLS certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Knowledge of surgical and medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe environment for patients and staff. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in preparing and maintaining records and writing reports. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly and to carry out orders quickly and effectively. Ability to follow and understand a surgical procedure and anticipate the surgeon's needs. Ability to work effectively as a team member within the organization.
