Protection & Controls Engineer (Relay Settings)
About the Opportunity
Join a growing power systems engineering organization seeking a Protection & Controls Engineer to support utility, transmission, generation, and industrial power projects throughout North America.
This role is ideal for an engineer with experience in relay settings development, protection coordination, power system studies, and utility power systems who enjoys solving complex technical challenges while working on critical infrastructure projects.
The position offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced power systems professionals while supporting projects that directly impact grid reliability and system performance.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain relay settings for transmission, distribution, and generation projects
- Perform short circuit, coordination, and protection studies using industry-standard software
- Conduct relay event analysis and troubleshooting investigations
- Perform arc flash and power system studies
- Support utility compliance and protection engineering initiatives
- Develop protection schemes for substations, feeders, generators, and other critical electrical infrastructure
- Review one-line diagrams, protection drawings, and control schematics
- Coordinate with clients, project teams, and field personnel to ensure successful project execution
- Participate in occasional site visits, commissioning support, and system evaluations
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- Experience in power systems, protection engineering, or relay settings development
- Knowledge of transmission, distribution, generation, or industrial power systems
- Experience with one or more of the following:
- SEL relays
- GE relays
- ABB relays
- Siemens protection systems
- Familiarity with power system analysis software such as:
- ASPEN
- CAPE
- ETAP
- SKM
- PowerWorld
- PSS®E
- Ability to interpret one-lines, three-lines, protection schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Preferred Experience
- Protection coordination studies
- Short circuit analysis
- Arc flash analysis
- Utility or consulting engineering experience
- NERC compliance exposure
- Substation protection and control systems

Pay: $100,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
