Position: Machinist (Mold & Tooling Specialist)
The Opportunity
Our client runs a high-precision tooling and plastics facility that specializes in complex, high-dollar mold manufacturing. If you are looking for a shop where your technical expertise will actually be utilized, this is the right move.
This is not a high-volume production environment where you will spend your day pushing a button to cycle identical, loose-tolerance parts. You will handle low-volume, highly intricate work on tool steels that requires an actual understanding of mold construction. The company invests heavily in top-tier machinery and maintains a clean, climate-controlled facility. It is a stable, professional environment built for specialists who take pride in the details.
What You’ll Do
This role is for a professional who understands how metal behaves when building complex tooling components. You will own your setups and execution from start to finish.
- Precision CNC Machining: Program, set up, and operate 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling centers to machine mold blocks, cores, cavities, and components.
- Blueprint & Model Interpretation: Work directly from engineering drawings and 3D CAD models, applying a strong grasp of GD&T to deliver precise geometries.
- Tooling Features: Machine critical mold elements—including gates, runners, slides, lifters, and cooling lines—ensuring everything aligns perfectly for the assembly bench.
- Quality Inspection: Use standard precision tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges) to verify your own work, routinely holding tolerances within $\pm 0.0002$ inches.
- Process Optimization: Partner with the engineering and toolmaking teams to troubleshoot setups, optimize feeds/speeds, and reduce cycle times on tough tool steels.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a candidate with specific expertise in the mold-building trade, not a generalist machine operator.
- Mold Machining Background: Proven experience performing precision CNC machining specifically for injection molds, compression molds, or die-cast tooling.
- Technical CNC Competence: Confident setting up and programming at the controller. You must know how to adjust parameters for tool steels like H13, S7, and P20.
- G-Code & CAM Literacy: Ability to read and edit G-code. Familiarity with CAM software (Mastercam, WorkNC, or equivalent) is highly preferred.
- The Toolmaker’s Mindset: You understand how mold components fit together and take pride in producing finishes that require minimal benchwork.
