Job Summary for Special Education Teacher
To create a flexible educational program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establish appropriate, effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for furthering the student’s education, in accordance with each student’s ability; establish appropriate, effective relationships with parents and other staff members; and to fully implement the curriculum in an effective instructional method.
Duties of a Special Education Teacher
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated by the school district
- Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students
- Prepares for classes assigned and maintains written evidence of preparation
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior and implement appropriate behavior management strategies
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curricular goals and in alignment with these goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and activities; communicating these goals to students
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media and technology (or technological resources)
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress monitoring and feedback
- Reviews and understands the legal documented needs of students and seeks assistance of district specialists when appropriate to ensure that students' needs are being met in accordance with District, State and Federal mandates.
- Implements and follows the approved IEP, GIEP and 504 of students.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations
- Maintain student confidentiality per district policy. FERPA/HIPAA privacy rule regulations, and student/counselor confidentiality.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
- Remains available to students and parents for educational related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aides and/or volunteers and evaluates their job performance
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through continued forms of professional learning
- Attends staff and department meetings and serves on staff committees as required
- Follows the procedures and policies outlined in the teacher handbook 20. Provide tiered interventions to targeted groups based on data, including differentiated instruction.
- Collect data and maintain adequate records related to attendance and pupil progress.
- Complete individualized Education plan (IEP) process, which includes IEP development, collaboration with multidisciplinary team members, and preparation of required paperwork
- Performs other duties as assigned by building administrators, such as but not limited to instructional support settings, bus duty, hall duty, cafeteria duty, recess duty, study hall supervision
Requirements for a Special Education Teacher
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid teaching certification in Special Education.
- Experience working with children with disabilities, including autism and developmental disabilities.
- Strong classroom management skills and experience in early childhood education or preschool settings.
- Knowledge of curriculum development and lesson planning tailored for special education needs.
- Familiarity with learning technologies that support student engagement and learning outcomes.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Understanding of childhood development principles and early intervention strategies.
- Experience in behavioral health or behavioral therapy is a plus.
