DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The role of a Groundskeeper I is an entry-level manual and semi-skilled position which involves basic landscaping and grounds maintenance on City-owned properties such as parks, fields, rights-of-ways, and general public areas. This position is responsible for performing groundskeeping, landscaping, and facility maintenance, including the operation and monitoring of the Splash Pad and public pool facilities. Work includes using hand tools, lawn care equipment, and performing routine maintenance tasks under direct supervision. Scheduled work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. but are subject to change based on projects or services. Employee may be subject to emergency on-call rotation and occasional overtime.
This is a mission critical position: Essential employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The City Manager makes the determination on who will be required to work in times of emergency.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Groundskeeping & Maintenance
- Mows grass and trims weeds in parks, rights-of-way, and other City-owned grounds.
- Rakes, edges, and removes litter and debris from public areas.
- Assists in planting flowers, shrubs, and grass under supervision.
- Operates hand tools and small power tools such as weed eaters, blowers, and push mowers.
- Supports setup and cleanup for special events or City functions.
- Assists with basic maintenance of landscaping equipment.
Splash Pad & Pool Operations
- Monitor and administer Splash Pad and public pool facilities, including restrooms and surrounding areas.
- Perform general and contaminant clean-up protocols to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
- Clean and remove pool cartridges and perform routine sanitation tasks.
- Conduct Splash Pad water checks three times daily and log results accurately.
- Enforce Splash Pad and pool rules and regulations, ensuring safe use of facilities.
- Complete daily operational forms and perform opening and closing procedures.
- Maintain accurate records, including attendance, incidents, and accident reports.
- Report safety hazards and necessary equipment repairs to supervisors.
- Provide friendly, welcoming customer service to all facility patrons.
General Duties
- Follows all safety procedures and guidelines.
- Maintains punctual and reliable attendance.
- Any additional duties assigned by the Parks Crew Leader, Public Works Superintendent, and/or the Public Works Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of and the ability to operate equipment involved in lawn care treatment including mowing, weeding, tilling, raking, digging, and other manual labor tasks.
- Knowledge of Splash Pad and general pool operation procedures and sanitation standards.
- Ability to perform outdoor manual labor in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely use hand tools and light power equipment.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Understanding of basic safety rules and safe work practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Acknowledges the rules of proper employee conduct in public and the requirement to follow the City uniform dress code when on the job.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution, required.
- Experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, facility maintenance, or public recreational facilities; preferred but not required.
- On-the-job training provided.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
- Valid Florida driver’s license, required at time of hire.
- Florida Public Pool Certification; preferred.
- CPR certification; preferred.
