Parent Support Staff
Reports To: Program Supervisor (or Program Director in the Supervisor's absence)
Classification: Direct service — instructional support
Position Summary
Parent Support Staff provide direct, individualized instructional support to parents enrolled in the program, guided by each parent's Family Service Plan (FSP) and Individual Program Plan (IPP) goals and objectives. Staff build trusted relationships with parents and their Circle of Support, help parents access essential community resources, and maintain accurate, timely documentation of all services provided.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Support & Relationship Building
- Establish and maintain a supportive relationship with parents, their Authorized Representatives, Circle of Support members, and advocates.
- Help parents work toward their FSP/IPP goals and objectives using best-practice instructional techniques.
- Follow the training or support schedule agreed upon with the parent and Program Supervisor or Program Director.
- Accompany parents to appointments as appropriate and requested.
- Help parents access and navigate generic community services and benefits, including Social Security Disability, Section 8 and other low-income housing programs, WIC, CalFresh/Food Stamps, childcare, schools, and related resources.
- Foster parents' self-determination and support their independence.
Health, Safety & Risk Management
- Minimize risks to the health, safety, and well-being of parents and children in the program.
- Maintain current First Aid/CPR certification and perform first aid, CPR, and emergency consultation as needed.
- Proactively communicate with the Program Supervisor about any safety concern, including danger to self or others, suspected abuse, sudden illness, unplanned hospitalization, or any special incident.
Documentation & Compliance
- Submit timely, legible, and accurate billing and payroll documentation, maximizing completion of authorized service hours.
- Submit service notes, attendance records, and monthly progress updates for assigned parents to the Program Supervisor on time.
- Document all training and support services using approved data collection tools and Family Case Notes/attendance records.
Advocacy, Confidentiality & Communication
- Respond to questions or issues raised by Regional Center staff professionally, and keep the Program Supervisor informed of all Regional Center contact.
- Respect and protect parent confidentiality and privacy at all times.
- Monitor for and report any violations of client rights or suspected dependent abuse.
- Ensure parents' rights and privacy are respected and enforced; refer any parent grievances to the Program Supervisor.
Meetings & Representation
- Participate in FSP Planning Meetings, initial assessments, and annual, semi-annual, and Regional Center Interdisciplinary Team (ID Team) meetings as needed.
- Attend parent meetings, monthly staff meetings, and annual in-service trainings.
- Represent the organization professionally at community meetings as assigned.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least six months of direct service experience supporting people with intellectual disabilities, or experience in a human services setting, preferred.
Skills & Attributes
- Fluent in English; bilingual/bicultural in Spanish is a plus.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Sound critical thinking and professional judgment.
- Able to work effectively on a multi-disciplinary, interagency team, including Regional Center Case Managers, community-based programs, school districts, and other community resources.
- Collaborative with co-workers, supervisors, and each parent's Circle of Support (Authorized Representatives, advocates, employment/day program providers).
- Respectful of the cultural and linguistic values of parents, children, and their Circle of Support.
- Willing and able to attend required staff meetings and trainings.
Certifications & Clearances
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Department of Justice fingerprint (Live Scan) clearance.
