Job Summary
- Local to the Nashville, TN/Kentucky border area for on-site collaboration.
We are seeking a skilled Contract Technical Writer for a project-based role focused on developing job aids, visual instructions, and work instructions for our cold heading, threading, stamping press operations, and automotive assembly. This position requires a quick turnaround on deliverables, with projects typically lasting 3-6 months and potential for extensions based on business needs/performance. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with production teams and engineers to translate complex manufacturing processes into user-friendly, illustrated guides that ensure compliance, safety, and productivity. Work may be hybrid (on-site in the Gallatin, TN/ Lexington, KY area as needed), with an emphasis on rapid iteration and deadline-driven output.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop Core Documentation: Create detailed work instructions, job aids, and visual guides for cold heading (e.g., wire forming and upsetting), threading (e.g., die setup and quality checks), and stamping press operations (e.g., die alignment, press cycling, and defect prevention) and automated assembly (e.g., robotic integration, conveyor sequencing, and part handling protocols).
- Incorporate Visual Elements: Design and integrate diagrams, flowcharts, infographics, photos, and step-by-step illustrations using tools like Adobe Illustrator, Visio, or Lucidchart to make instructions intuitive and accessible for shop floor operators.
- Collaborate with Teams: Work with Operations Leadership, process engineers, operators, and quality assurance staff to gather process details, validate content accuracy, and incorporate feedback for revisions.
- Ensure Compliance and Clarity: Align documentation with industry standards (e.g., ISO 9001, OSHA safety guidelines) while using plain language to minimize errors and training time.
- Project Management: Manage multiple short-turnaround projects, prioritizing tasks to meet aggressive deadlines (e.g., 1–2-week cycles for drafts and finals).
- Review and Update: Revise existing materials based on process changes, audits, or lessons learned from production runs.
- Testing and Rollout: Support pilot testing of instructions on the shop floor and assist in training sessions or digital deployment (e.g., via LMS or mobile apps).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Communications, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 2+ years of experience as a technical writer in a manufacturing environment, with a focus on process documentation.
- Proven ability to create visual aids and instructions for mechanical or industrial processes.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing operations, particularly metal forming techniques like cold heading, threading, or stamping, and automated assembly (hands-on experience preferred).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and the ability to simplify complex technical concepts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite, and document management tools (e.g., SharePoint or Confluence).
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with quick adaptability to changing priorities.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with regulatory compliance documentation (e.g., GMP, cGMP) or safety protocols in high-volume production.
- Familiarity with e-learning tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline) for interactive job aids.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles or Six Sigma for process optimization.
- Experience in stamping press operations or automotive manufacturing environments.
Compensation and Contract Details
- Hourly Rate: Competitive, ranging from $30-$40/hour based on experience and project scope.
- Duration: Project-based (initial 6 months), with potential for renewal.
