Job Overview
Colonie Youth Center, Inc. is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) Teacher to create a nurturing, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for young children. The ideal candidate is passionate about early childhood education, committed to supporting children's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development, and experienced in implementing curriculum that promotes school readiness. As a UPK Teacher, you will plan and deliver high-quality instruction using district-approved curriculum, assess student progress, build positive relationships with families, and foster a safe and inclusive classroom environment.
Responsibilities
Teaching & Curriculum
- Implement the Creative Curriculum and other district-approved curricula in alignment with NYS Early Learning Guidelines.
- Create an engaging, child-centered learning environment with age-appropriate materials, displays, and learning centers.
- Develop and implement daily lesson plans that support individual student needs and curriculum goals.
- Assess children's development and maintain accurate progress documentation.
- Develop individualized goals for students based on assessment data.
- Prepare progress reports, attendance records, assessments, and required documentation on time.
- Promote children's physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth through developmentally appropriate activities.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student development and learning progress.
- Conduct parent-teacher conferences twice annually.
- Participate in required professional development and training opportunities.
Classroom Management
- Ensure the safety and proper supervision of all children.
- Foster positive behavior and self-esteem through encouraging guidance techniques.
- Implement positive classroom discipline practices.
- Establish daily routines that support classroom objectives and student success.
- Create an inclusive environment that supports and integrates children with special needs.
- Follow all district and program health and safety policies and procedures.
Leadership
- Supervise, coach, and evaluate Teaching Assistants in accordance with organizational policies.
- Collaborate with colleagues and administration to support program goals and student success.
Qualifications
Required
- New York State Education Department background clearance.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain).
- Valid New York State driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Strong organizational, time management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work effectively with families, staff, and community partners.
- Previous staff supervision experience
Education & Certification
Candidates must possess one of the following:
- New York State Certification Birth-Grade 2, OR
- New York State Certification Nursery-Grade 6 (N-6)
Preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience.
- Experience with Creative Curriculum or other NYS approved curricula.
- Familiarity with ECERS (Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale), ESI, and Brigance.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, stretch, and move throughout the day in a classroom setting.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and by phone.
- Ability to use standard office and classroom technology.
