Distinguishing Features of the Class
The work involves responsibility for overseeing court administration by managing all aspects of court operations and nonjudicial case processing activities for a town court system. An employee in this class provides clerical support activities relating to the administration of legal processes and procedures. An incumbent in this position receives general supervision from the Town Justices and exercises independent judgement regarding completion of his/her duties.
Typical Work Activities
- Prepares dockets or calendars of cases to be called;
- Records case dispositions, court orders, and arrangements made for payment of court fees;
- Answers inquiries from the general public regarding judicial procedures, court appearances, trial dates, adjournments, outstanding warrants, summonses, subpoenas, witness fees, and payment of fines;
- Prepares and issue orders of the court, including probation orders, fine and no-show letters, suspensions, release documentation, sentencing information, and summonses;
- Maintains records of vehicle and traffic tickets;
- Prepares documents recording the outcomes of court proceedings;
- Instructs parties about timing of court appearances;
- Explains procedures or forms to parties in cases or to the general public;
- Searches files, and contact witnesses, attorneys, and litigants, in order to obtain information for the court, and;
- Prepares and files State reports with the Department of Criminal Justice Services as necessary.
Full Performance Knowledges, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
- Good knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, office procedures and terminology;
- Good knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, and government regulations;
- Knowledge of Courtroom Program and Web DVS is desirable;
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
- Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records;
- Ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions;
- Ability to develop cooperative working relationships and deal diplomatically with the public;
- Clerical aptitude, and;
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Pay: $31.05 - $32.05 per hour
