Join Black Excellence Group and Champion Our School Communities
At Black Excellence Group (BE Group), we empower students across Portland through culturally affirming, relationship-centered programming. Through our four pillars — Weekly BE Group© programming, Advocacy, Student Supports, and Excellence Experiences© — we support over 400 students from PreK through 8th grade each year with trajectory-shifting programming that fosters belonging, confidence, and community, so our children can thrive. If you are a seasoned relationship-builder who knows how to move between a principal's office, a classroom, and a community dinner — and make every one of those rooms better — we invite you to join our team.
About the Role
We are hiring an Engagement Manager for the 2026–27 school year (September 2026 – June 2027). This is a limited-term, part-time role on our Program Team, reporting directly to our Founder + CEO. Depending on funding and budget, this role may extend into future school years.
The Engagement Manager is BE Group's relationship manager and trusted advisor to our school partners — consulting with school and district leaders to strengthen school communities and create a better school journey for BE students and families. Operating as an extension of the Founder + CEO, you will own relationships with school leadership, lead our facilitator team, and oversee the engagement and effectiveness of our program — how well the content is landing and where adjustments are needed.
Engagement Managers are bridge-builders and advocates. They know how to advise a district leader and champion a student in the same conversation, hold trust on all sides of a complex dynamic, and turn what they see in classrooms and communities into action that helps students thrive.
Schedule & Presence
- Approximately 20 hours per week, working at our BE.HQ office in NW Portland or within the schools.
- A standard weekly schedule, with flex when the week calls for it — for example, a shorter day on a Tuesday to offset a board meeting or evening event later that week.
- Facilitating or co-facilitating student group cohorts as needed, and substitute facilitation coverage as program needs arise.
- Regular site visits and classroom observations at BE Group school sites.
- Principal and partner meetings, school board meetings, listening sessions, and other cross-functional meetings that need a BE Group presence.
- Occasional evening community events, including family dinners and partner engagements.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as BE Group's representative to our school clients and a key relationship contact for school administrators and leaders, engaging with principals regularly and visiting school sites often.
- Collaborate with and advise school and district leaders — school improvement planning, practices, and systems that support equitable student outcomes and joyful learning environments.
- Ensure program effectiveness and student engagement through classroom observations, regular communication with facilitators, and collaboration with school staff and families.
- Lead the facilitator team — classroom observation, feedback on program delivery, and team collaborations.
- Represent BE Group in external settings — district workgroups, advisory committees, school board meetings, and listening sessions — elevating student and family perspectives.
- Lead community engagement and family programming, including family dinners and community events.
- Partner with school staff to identify emerging student needs, recommending responsive supports and program adjustments.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate student group cohorts throughout the school year, and step in as a substitute facilitator as needed.
Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Experience consulting with or advising organizational, school, or district leadership — with the authority, credibility, and discernment to hold those relationships well.
- Ability to discern when to act independently and when to engage the Founder + CEO for backing, escalation, or organizational support.
- Experience managing or running staff teams.
- Experience facilitating student programming.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities, particularly within the context of student well-being and educational equity.
- Strong relationship-building skills across audiences: school administrators, families, community partners, and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Adeptness with challenging interpersonal dynamics, including conflict mediation and the ability to thread the needle between competing interests.
- Experience in school improvement planning, educator professional development, or education consulting.
Compensation & Benefits
- $34 – 44 an hour, depending on experience
- Meaningful, mission-driven work with direct impact on students' lives
- Generous sick leave and paid holidays
- Annual wellbeing bonus to support your wellness goals
- A passionate and supportive, values-aligned team environment
Our Commitment to Equity & Inclusion
Black educators, facilitators, and community leaders are strongly encouraged to apply. We value lived experience, cultural connection, and the ability to build authentic, affirming relationships with students and families.

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and consider qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, genetic information, or any other protected status under applicable law.
Compliance & District Requirements
This position abides by ODE regulations, District policies, and BE Group norms and protocols.
Required to work directly with students:
- BE Group staffing background check
- Completion of District required trainings within the first 10 days
- Oregon Department of Education criminal background check and fingerprinting
- Compliance with District on-site protocols, including sign-in and badge requirements
