Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Substance Abuse Counselor to join our team. As a Substance Abuse Counselor, you will be responsible for providing counseling and support to individuals struggling with substance abuse issues. Your role will involve conducting patient assessments, developing treatment plans, and providing ongoing counseling to promote recovery and overall well-being.
Duties
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments to determine the severity of substance abuse issues.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs and goals.
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions to address underlying issues contributing to substance abuse.
- Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques to facilitate behavior change and promote recovery.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as social workers and medical staff, to ensure comprehensive care for patients.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical documentation in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Collect data on patient outcomes and participate in research activities to improve treatment effectiveness.
Experience:
- Proven experience in substance abuse counseling or related field.
- Strong knowledge of addiction treatment modalities and best practices.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools such as ICD-9 for accurate assessment and diagnosis.
- Proficiency in medical documentation and record keeping.
- Experience in data collection and analysis to evaluate treatment outcomes.
- Previous work in a hospital or clinical setting is preferred.
- Ability to provide compassionate patient care while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Skilled in conducting group therapy sessions and facilitating support groups.
- Knowledge of social work principles and resources for additional patient support.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in social work, psychology, counseling, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid licensure or certification as an addiction counselor or mental health professional (e.g., CADC, LCSW, LPC).
- Proven experience working with individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
- Strong knowledge of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, ICD coding (ICD-9/10), CPT coding for billing purposes, and clinical documentation standards.
- Proficiency in evidence-based practices such as motivational interviewing, behavioral therapy, applied behavior analysis (ABA), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
- Experience working with diverse populations across various settings including hospitals, community clinics, or home-based care.
- Ability to perform client assessments in therapy settings accurately while maintaining patient confidentiality under HIPAA guidelines.
- Excellent crisis management skills with the ability to handle high-pressure situations effectively.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR/EHR management), medical terminology, ICD coding systems (ICD-9/10), and CPT coding for documentation accuracy.
- Strong communication skills for client engagement and case management coordination; culturally competent approach preferred.
