Certa Logistics, Inc. is hiring an experienced Full-Time Fleet Mechanic to take primary responsibility for the safety, reliability, and daily readiness of our delivery vehicles.
We currently operate a growing fleet of approximately 18 Ford, GMC, and Chevrolet vehicles, including cargo vans, cutaway vans, box trucks, step vans, and P1000-style delivery vehicles. Although much of the fleet consists of 2020 to 2022 model vehicles, they accumulate substantial mileage while operating delivery routes—many of which exceed 200 miles per day.
This is not strictly a reactive repair position. We need a mechanic who will build and maintain a dependable preventive-maintenance program, identify problems before they result in breakdowns, respond promptly to driver-reported defects, and help keep the maximum number of vehicles safe and available for daily route operations.
The person hired will serve as Certa Logistics’ primary in-house maintenance professional. Mobile mechanics and outside repair facilities will remain available for overflow, tires, alignments, dealer-level repairs, and major engine or transmission work.
Primary responsibilities
The Fleet Mechanic will:
- Review driver pre-trip and post-trip inspection reports and promptly investigate reported vehicle defects.
- Inspect vehicles and determine whether they are safe to operate, require scheduled repair, or should be temporarily removed from service.
- Prioritize maintenance and repairs according to safety, route requirements, vehicle availability, and operational urgency.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including oil and filter changes, fluid services, lubrication, belt and hose inspections, battery testing, and general safety inspections.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and drivability problems on light- and medium-duty delivery vehicles.
- Service and repair brake, steering, suspension, wheel-bearing, cooling, starting, charging, lighting, HVAC, fuel, and emission-control systems.
- Diagnose warning lights and intermittent electrical problems using appropriate scan tools, service information, meters, and testing equipment.
- Perform minor repairs involving vehicle doors, mirrors, steps, latches, cargo-area hardware, body components, and related delivery-vehicle equipment.
- Conduct post-repair inspections and road tests to confirm that repairs were completed correctly.
- Help prevent roadside failures by identifying developing problems during inspections and routine service.
- Assist with breakdown diagnosis and coordinate mobile or outside repair services when work cannot be completed in-house.
- Schedule more extensive preventive maintenance and repair work during weekends or other periods when additional vehicles are available.
- Maintain accurate digital maintenance records for every vehicle.
- Create and close repair orders documenting the complaint, diagnosis, work performed, labor, parts used, mileage, and completion date.
- Track preventive-maintenance intervals, annual inspections, recurring problems, warranties, recalls, and vehicle downtime.
- Order parts and shop supplies while maintaining reasonable inventory levels for commonly used items.
- Review parts and repair invoices for accuracy and identify opportunities to control maintenance costs.
- Coordinate work with tire vendors, alignment shops, dealerships, mobile mechanics, towing companies, and specialty repair facilities.
- Keep company leadership informed about out-of-service vehicles, expected repair completion, significant expenses, and recurring fleet issues.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow appropriate procedures involving personal protective equipment, vehicle lifting and support, lockout/tagout, chemical handling, battery safety, and waste-fluid disposal.
- Perform work in accordance with manufacturer requirements, company policies, and applicable OSHA, DOT, and FMCSA safety standards.
- Help establish maintenance procedures, inspection standards, parts controls, and fleet-readiness reporting as the company grows.
- Perform other fleet-maintenance duties as assigned.
What success looks like
The successful mechanic will:
- Keep safety-critical defects from being overlooked or deferred.
- Reduce preventable roadside breakdowns and missed routes.
- Keep preventive maintenance current across the fleet.
- Communicate vehicle status clearly and consistently.
- Document every repair and inspection accurately.
- Diagnose problems rather than repeatedly replacing parts without confirming the cause.
- Complete repairs correctly the first time.
- Recognize when work can be completed in-house and when a specialized vendor is the better choice.
- Manage maintenance priorities independently without requiring constant supervision.
- Treat company vehicles, tools, parts, and repair funds responsibly.
- Build a reliable maintenance operation that can scale as Certa Logistics adds vehicles and routes.
Minimum qualifications
Applicants must have:
- A high school diploma or GED.
- At least four years of advanced automotive, fleet, light-truck, or medium-duty truck repair and maintenance experience.
- Strong preventive-maintenance and mechanical diagnostic skills.
- Experience diagnosing modern vehicle electrical and electronic systems.
- Experience using professional scan tools, digital multimeters, service information, and wiring diagrams.
- Working knowledge of brakes, steering, suspension, drivability, cooling, starting and charging systems, HVAC, and general vehicle maintenance.
- The ability to work independently and organize repairs according to operational priorities.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to document work in a digital fleet-maintenance system.
- The ability to safely operate and road-test the types of vehicles in Certa Logistics’ fleet.
- The ability to work regularly scheduled weekend hours when more vehicles are available for maintenance.
- The ability to work on site at the terminal
- The ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work underneath or inside vehicles for extended periods.
- The ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds and safely handle heavier parts using assistance or appropriate equipment.
- Dependable attendance, punctuality, and communication.
Preferred qualifications
The following are preferred but are not required for every qualified applicant:
- Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel, or truck-maintenance vocational program.
- Current ASE certifications.
- ASE Master Automobile Technician or Medium/Heavy Truck Technician certification.
- Experience maintaining mixed Ford, GMC, and Chevrolet commercial fleets.
- Experience working on cargo vans, cutaway chassis, box trucks, and step vans.
- Experience with high-mileage or high-utilization commercial vehicles.
- Experience with both gasoline and light-duty diesel systems.
- Relevant DOT annual-inspection or brake-inspector qualifications.
- Air-conditioning service certification.
- Basic welding, fabrication, or delivery-vehicle body-repair experience.
- Previous responsibility for parts ordering, inventory control, vendor management, or maintenance records.
- Experience as a lead mechanic, shop foreman, or primary mechanic for a small or growing fleet.
Schedule expectations
This is a full-time position. Because Certa Logistics operates vehicles throughout the week, the maintenance schedule must be built around route requirements.
Regular weekend availability is required because Saturday and Sunday generally provide better opportunities to complete preventive maintenance and more involved repairs while additional vehicles are off route. The exact weekly schedule will be established according to fleet needs.
Occasional schedule adjustments may be necessary when a safety-critical repair, breakdown, or unexpected vehicle shortage affects route operations.
