FLSA Status/Job Type: Part-time, Seasonal (Non-Exempt)
Locations: Village and Bressi Ranch Boys & Girls Clubs
Summer League July 11th and ends August 22nd (Playoffs/Final Day)
*Opportunities to Ref seasonally in our following leagues in the Fall, Winter and Spring
Hours: 6-8 hours per week
Saturdays: Games are on Saturdays from approximately 9:30am-4:30pm (must be available to work for 6-8 hours)
Job Overview:
The Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad is looking for a dedicated Basketball Referee to support our seasonal Youth Basketball League. This is a part-time position with games being held on Saturdays. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of high school-level basketball experience, a strong coaching or referee background, and a passion for working with youth athletes. We have 4 seasons of our youth basketball league. We are looking for someone with open availability on Saturdays.
Key Responsibilities:
Game Officiating: Officiate youth basketball games on Saturdays in accordance with league rules and guidelines. Ensure fair play, enforce rules consistently, and maintain control of the game. Make clear, confident calls and manage game flow effectively.
Player Safety & Sportsmanship: Promote a safe playing environment for all participants. Address unsafe behavior and enforce rules to prevent injuries. Encourage good sportsmanship among players, coaches, and spectators.
Game Day Operations: Help manage game timing and transitions between games. Support overall gym supervision during league play.
Flexibility & Adaptability: Be flexible and available to officiate based on league scheduling needs. Assist with scoreboard operation, if needed.
Communication: Communicate clearly with coaches, players, and fellow staff regarding calls and game expectations. Handle conflict or disputes calmly and professionally.
Professionalism & Reliability: Arrive on time and prepare for all assigned games. Maintain a professional demeanor and represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad positively.
Qualifications:
Required:
Strong knowledge of basketball rules and gameplay.
Ability to officiate games in a fair, consistent, and confident manner.
Comfortable making quick decisions under pressure.
Preferred:
Prior refereeing experience (youth or competitive levels).
Experience playing basketball at high school, college, or competitive level.
Experience working with youth in a sports or recreational setting.
