Job Purpose
The CNC Metal Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting CNC metalworking equipment to produce fabricated metal components accurately, safely, and efficiently according to production schedules, fabrication drawings, work instructions, and quality requirements.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience operating CNC equipment in a metal fabrication or manufacturing environment, strong mechanical aptitude, and the ability to read fabrication drawings, make machine adjustments, and consistently produce parts within specification.
Key Responsibilities
CNC Machine Operation
- Set up and operate CNC metalworking machinery according to production schedules, drawings, and work instructions.
- Load programs and select the appropriate tooling for each job.
- Verify machine settings, tooling, offsets, and material before starting production.
- Load, position, and secure raw materials safely and accurately.
- Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and work orders.
- Perform machine setup, offsets, tooling adjustments, and basic program modifications when required.
- Monitor machine operation throughout the production process.
- Make appropriate machine adjustments to maintain quality, accuracy, and productivity.
- Identify and resolve basic machine, tooling, material, and dimensional issues.
Quality Control
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspections as required.
- Inspect completed parts using appropriate measuring and inspection tools.
- Use tape measures, calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measuring equipment.
- Verify dimensions, tolerances, hole locations, cuts, and other requirements against drawings and specifications.
- Identify defective or non-conforming parts and take appropriate corrective action.
- Minimize scrap and rework through proper machine setup, inspection, and process control.
Machine Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Perform routine machine inspections before and during operation.
- Carry out basic machine cleaning and preventive maintenance activities.
- Identify abnormal machine conditions and report equipment problems promptly.
- Troubleshoot basic CNC, tooling, material, and setup issues.
- Coordinate with Maintenance, Production, Engineering, and Quality personnel when technical support is required.
Production Documentation
- Accurately record production quantities.
- Document scrap, rework, downtime, and production issues.
- Complete production travelers, work orders, and required production records.
- Follow all applicable SOPs, quality procedures, and production requirements.
- Communicate production delays, equipment problems, and quality issues to the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of CNC machine operation experience preferred.
- Previous experience in metal fabrication, structural steel, or manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience with CNC machine setup and operation.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and fabrication drawings.
- Working knowledge of dimensions, tolerances, and basic machining principles.
- Understanding of CNC machine offsets, tooling, and setup procedures.
- Basic understanding of CNC programming and program adjustments.
- Ability to use measuring equipment such as tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to identify dimensional and fabrication quality problems.
- Ability to follow production travelers, work orders, SOPs, and quality requirements.
- Strong attention to detail, safety, quality, and productivity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Mazak CNC equipment or comparable CNC machinery.
- Experience with CNC equipment used in structural steel or heavy metal fabrication.
- Experience working with large steel components and fabricated metal parts.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, 5S, continuous improvement, and standardized work.
- Experience tracking production quantities, cycle times, downtime, scrap, and rework.
- Forklift or material-handling experience is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and work around manufacturing equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move metal materials and components as required.
- Ability to safely handle metal parts, tooling, fixtures, and equipment.
- Ability to work in an active manufacturing environment while wearing required PPE.
Safety & Quality Expectations
The CNC Metal Operator is expected to:
- Follow all company safety procedures and required PPE standards.
- Complete required machine inspections before operation.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area using 5S principles.
- Verify first-piece quality before continuing production when required.
- Immediately report equipment problems, safety concerns, quality defects, and production delays.
- Minimize scrap and rework through proper setup, inspection, and process control.
- Maintain accurate production and quality documentation.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a hands-on CNC professional who understands that effective CNC operation requires more than simply loading material and starting a machine.
The operator must be capable of properly setting up equipment, reading drawings, selecting appropriate tooling, making machine adjustments, identifying problems, maintaining dimensional accuracy, and keeping production moving safely and efficiently.
Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
