Purpose of Position:
Under immediate supervision, in various City agencies, receives training and assists in carrying out defined tasks to provide necessary and improved community services; performs related work.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. In various City agencies, assists in providing community services by performing liaison functions between the agency and the individuals it serves.
2. In the Department of Social Services, serves as interpreter at service centers. Helps clients fill out and submit forms. Visits elderly persons in their homes or in institutions. Visits children who have no relatives and are confined to public or private institutions.
3. Receives apprenticeship training in the auxiliary work relative to the various manpower and community development programs of the Human Resources Administration and its constituent agencies.
4. Works with community groups in community health programs, such as the elimination of areas of infestation, and other pest control activities. Participates in the removal of garbage and trash from vacant lots, backyards and other areas.
5. In the New York City Housing Authority, works to improve tenant-management relations.
6. May contact residents of projects and surrounding neighborhoods to elicit their support and participation in group recreation activities, such as sports, games, flower gardening, choral singing and bus outings. Also assists in the direction of tenant activities programs at the projects.
7. May interpret and discuss these programs with individual tenants, tenant and community leaders, and tenant and community groups.
8. Sets up and coordinates schedules of activities and organizes team competitions.
9. In the Housing Authority and in the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, distributes informational material to neighborhood residents and business owners.
10. May perform routine office tasks such as filing, keeping records and typing. May answer telephones and make referrals or take messages. May act as messenger when required.
11. Generally is called upon to improve communication between the community and the agency.
