The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) is currently seeking to fill an Assistant Maintenance Director position. The Assistant Director of Maintenance assists in the overall leadership and management of the Maintenance Department. The Assistant Director’s primary duty is to supervise the day-to-day operations and personnel employed in the Maintenance Department while supporting fleet availability, service reliability, safe and compliant maintenance operations, and effective shop workflow. The Assistant Director of Maintenance also assists in the continuity of departmental leadership in the absence of the Director of Maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises maintenance personnel. Duties include organizing and prioritizing job assignments, assigning personnel to job tasks, monitoring quality control of work performed, assisting personnel with instructions and technical information, and instructing personnel in the proper use of tools and equipment.
- Assists the Parts Manager in procurement of inventory, disbursement of parts, and inventory control. Supervises the use of equipment and supplies. Fulfills the duties of the Parts Manager as necessary.
- Assures that all personnel perform their work in accordance with the Safety Program and comply with all applicable OSHA and EPA regulations and requirements. Participates in semi-monthly facility inspections. Supports safety training programs for personnel.
- Assists the Director of Maintenance in administrative duties as required. Duties include personnel management, corrective action administration in coordination with Human Resources and applicable labor agreements, grievance response support, leave scheduling, timekeeping, and related administrative responsibilities.
- Participates in planning of future projects, operational needs, and financial requirements. Recognizes problem areas and recommends solutions to improve maintenance operations, efficiency, and fleet readiness.
- Monitors departmental performance, helps ensure operational efficiency, and works to achieve established performance metrics and targets as assigned by the Chief Operating Officer.
- Responds to emergency situations needing immediate attention. Directs road call responses and responses to industrial accidents, injuries, and other urgent maintenance-related matters.
Is available for emergency responses on weekends and evenings as needed.

Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Five years of experience as a supervisor in a vehicle maintenance shop or closely related fleet maintenance environment.
- Experience in the repair of diesel engines, large vehicles and applicable OSHA and EPA regulations.
- Knowledge of personal computers, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Proven administrative and supervisory skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in heavy-duty fleet, public transit, or commercial vehicle maintenance operations.
- Experience working in a unionized environment
- Experience with maintenance tracking systems, fleet management systems, inventory systems, or related operational software.
- Experience with budgeting, vendor coordination, procurement support, or other maintenance related administrative functions.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit and stand for an extended period of time.
- Must have manual dexterity to operate a computer, office equipment and maintenance-related machinery.
- Must be able to lift 50lbs to waist level, carry 35lbs, utilize tools, reach, stoop, crawl, bend, kneel, lie on floor, climb ladders and stairs, push equipment and turn knobs, screws and bolts.
