Position Overview
The Assistant General Manager (AGM) is the General Manager’s right hand in the daily front-of-house operation of Maplewood Public House, a full-service restaurant and production taproom in Glen Ellyn. The AGM leads the service team day to day — training, coaching, scheduling, and handling employee matters — while ensuring an exceptional guest experience and full adherence to company policies, standards, and procedures. The AGM operates alongside the Executive Bar Manager, who owns the beverage program, beverage inventory, and bar team; the AGM owns service standards, the dining room and service staff, and overall shift execution. Success in this role looks like a well-trained, accountable team, smooth daily operations, and guests who return.
People Leadership & Training
- Serves as a role model, providing accessibility to all staff for open communication, leadership direction, and motivation
- Leads onboarding and ongoing training of service, host, retail, and support staff on service standards, hospitality, food knowledge, and steps of service; ensures staff are correctly trained for their positions
- Ensures staff attend and apply the beverage and product trainings delivered by the Executive Bar Manager
- Provides ongoing, constructive feedback and effective coaching tailored to individual employee needs
- Serves as first line for day-to-day employee relations for the service team: addresses staff concerns promptly, resolves conflicts, documents performance issues, and partners with the GM and People & Culture on corrective action; coordinates with the Executive Bar Manager on matters involving bar staff
- Holds self and others accountable and pursues excellence; actively develops staff while holding them accountable for performance
- Develops relationships built on trust and inclusion; actively supports diversity, inclusion, and belonging efforts
- Assists with the interview and hiring process for service, host, retail, and support positions
- Builds and owns the weekly FOH schedule at a three-week outlook, incorporating input from the Executive Bar Manager for bar staffing and responding to staff requests
- Conducts routine check-ins with staff and maintains close verbal and written communication to ensure smooth daily operations
- Provides clear, consistent, timely, and respectful communication
Guest Experience
- Embodies Maplewood’s culture and values in every guest interaction and always represents the company in a positive way
- Present on the floor during peak periods and special occasions to provide guidance and supervision to staff, with support from the GM
- Prioritizes guest experience and recognizes and embraces opportunities for hospitality
- Resolves guest questions, concerns, and complaints promptly and professionally
- Works floor shifts as needed to provide guidance and supervision
Daily Operations
- Works daily restaurant operations and runs shifts as needed; coordinates Manager-on-Duty coverage with the GM and Executive Bar Manager
- Independently oversees and executes opening and closing procedures
- Correctly reconciles end-of-shift reporting for assigned revenue centers
- Ensures adherence to all operational standards and policies; supports full execution of company initiatives with continuous improvement to quality, service, and operating efficiencies
- Communicates clearly between FOH and kitchen staff; partners with the Executive Chef and BOH leadership to complete job tasks successfully
- Identifies, maintains, and promotes a clean and safe working environment in the dining room, host, and retail areas with attention to detail
- Enforces health code, food safety, and responsible alcohol service standards on every shift, including protocols for over-intoxicated patrons
- Assesses and monitors daily operations and staff for optimal guest experience
- Keeps physical and online food menus updated on a regular basis and publishes beverage menu changes supplied by the Executive Bar Manager
- Tracks retail inventory, coaches staff on retail sales, provides overall sales assistance with guests, and leads overall organization of merchandise/retail items.
- Reviews weekly and monthly budget and financial information with the GM to identify areas for improvement or correction, and executes plans to drive business outcomes
- Supports the planning and execution of onsite events and programming alongside the GM and Executive Bar Manager; understands the needs of daily events and communicates them to staff
- Demonstrates ability to adapt and adjust readily to ever-changing circumstances, using problem-solving skills and resourcefulness
Product Knowledge
- Maintains strong working knowledge of the food menu and current beverage offerings — Maplewood beers and spirits, Half Acre beers, and non-alcoholic products — sufficient to guide guests and support staff, deferring beverage program expertise to the Executive Bar Manager
Required Skills / Abilities
- Must be 21+ years old

- Flexible in daily tasks with ability to prioritize effectively
- Passionate about hospitality and mentoring staff; leads by example
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with (or ability to learn) POS, scheduling, and inventory systems
- Illinois BASSET certification and Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
Beneficial Experience
- 2+ years in a senior hospitality management role
- 5+ years in a hospitality position
- Full-service restaurant experience
Physical Requirements
- Able to lift 65 lbs and maneuver heavier kegs (with assistance if needed) and cases of beer
- Must be able to bend, twist, reach, and stand for long periods of time
Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
