GENERAL WORK FUNCTIONS
This position serves as a working leader while augmenting call-taking and dispatch functions. The
Assistant Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily direction and coordination of shift
training activities while supporting the Shift Supervisor in the overall management of operations.
Primary responsibilities include mentoring Lead Telecommunicators and trainees, monitoring
training progress, ensuring adherence to established training standards, providing coaching and
mentorship, and evaluating employee development. The Assistant Shift Supervisor assists with
shift operations, provides technical guidance to staff, and assumes supervisory responsibilities in
the absence of the Shift Supervisor. This position works under the general supervision of the Shift
Supervisor and the 911 Operations Manager. The Assistant Shift Supervisor exercises independent
judgment within established policies and procedures while ensuring consistency in training,
operational readiness, and employee performance.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs all duties of a certified Telecommunicator, including emergency call taking,
law enforcement, fire, and EMS dispatching, radio communications, CAD operation,
NCIC/DCI transactions, emergency notifications, and related communications functions.
Coordinates and oversees all shift training activities to ensure trainees receive consistent,
standardized instruction in accordance with established training guidelines.
Mentors Lead Telecommunicators by providing guidance, monitoring instructional
effectiveness, and ensuring compliance with the agency's training program.
Reviews trainee documentation, including Daily Observation Reports (DORs), to
evaluate progress, identify trends, and ensure accurate documentation of performance.
Coordinates and oversees remedial training plans for employees requiring additional
instruction or performance improvement.
Ensures newly implemented policies, procedures, technologies, and operational changes
are effectively communicated and incorporated into shift training activities.
Assists with the planning, coordination, and delivery of continuing education, in-service
training, and professional development opportunities for shift personnel.
Evaluates the effectiveness of shift training initiatives and recommends improvements to
training practices, materials, and instructional methods to enhance employee performance
and consistency.
Maintains accurate training records and regularly communicates trainee performance,
progress, and recommendations to the 911 Training & Quality Assurance Unit and 911
Operations Manager.
Assists the Shift Supervisor in coordinating shift operations while providing operational
guidance to personnel during routine and emergency incidents.
Serves as Acting Shift Supervisor during temporary absences of the Shift Supervisor and
exercises delegated supervisory authority as necessary to ensure continuity of operations.
Works rotating day/night shifts and requires on-call status to work additional shifts as
needed during disasters.
