Position Summary: Holds managerial oversight and responsibility for a high complexity testing clinical laboratory regarding all testing personnel, and directs and coordinates activities of workers performing chemical, microscopic, and Bacteriological tests. Assures accurate and timely reporting of all test results, and assists in the management of Gila River Health Care Clinical Laboratories and all Point of Care testing areas system-wide by performing the following duties personally and through subordinate staff. Responsible for ensuring that all critical tasks are fulfilled on a timely basis.
Critical Tasks:
- Ensures efficient operations of the Laboratory, including compliance with all state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Coordinates with the Laboratory Director and other supervisory personnel to continually improve the working environment and outcomes, staffing, workload, technical and operational capabilities, employee productivity and other subjects as they arise.
- Maintains continually and accurately updated knowledge of all areas of the lab including chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology and serology.
- Possesses complete knowledge of all test requirements and CLIA regulation, and updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and professional advancement programs.
- Ensures that all delegated responsibilities are undertaken on a highly effective basis, with emphasis upon remedial actions taken when test systems and test results deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Ensures highly effective staff recruitment, development, scheduling, orientation and training, laboratory inventory, quality control, customer relations, budgeting, employee evaluations, and regulatory compliance.
- Establishes standards, normal values, and methods of control for all laboratory tests performed.
- Investigates any necessary or more stringent/sensitive systems for identifying and monitoring while also implementing appropriate methods for improvement and enhancement of lab operations in the best interests of patients.
- Rapidly takes successful corrective actions when test systems and results deviate from established performance standards and specifications.
- Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives, preparing proposals, developing and performing parallel testing, and monitoring progress.
- Plans, designs, and directs installation of new and improved laboratory techniques.
- Demonstrates ability to regularly change priorities to accomplish all tasks despite frequent interruptions.
- Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing, while performing all essential functions.
- Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or related Healthcare field.
- Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist with ASCP or equivalent certification required. Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist within the last ten years performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Minimum of five (5) years supervising a major function or unit within a licensed clinical laboratory.
- Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Gila River Community and/or other Native American cultures.
- Interest in medical subjects, patient services/care, and customer service.
- Prior medical environment work experience is preferred.
